Description

The digital map app named “Women''s Map/Women''s Library” shows places in the Prague 1 and Prague 2 districts in close surroundings to the library, tied with women''s history. Visitors can pick these spots on the map and get to know these mostly forgotten places. The map will be used also for pre-designed walks through the city centre, together with multimedia material created from a portfolio of library collections.  Each individual spot on the map will be linked to a set of pictures, text and contextual background. The map of selected places will be available in digital as well as an analogue version.

The project is based in the neighbourhood, where the Gender Studies library is located in the district of Prague 2 and Prague 1. In this neighbourhood, we can find various places tied with the history of the Czech Women''s Movement (such as Minerva, the first high school/comprehensive school for girls in Czechia, the first secondary school for girls in Vodičkova St.), with significant women of history (Eliška Krásnohorská,  Karolína Světlá) famous figures and events, significantly tied with women''s equal rights and women''s education and intelligence. The library itself and its collections are unique with its focus on women''s education.

In cooperation with the municipality of Prague 2 and City of Prague, the keeper of river quay (a favourite meeting and culture spot) and other project partners (CAMP, Multicultural Centre of Prague, Museum of Czech Literature, Municipal Library of Prague, Dittrichova branch), public events will be organised, thematically related to and sourcing from the library collections and its archives. Real and virtual activities in the map app will draw attention to the need for public debate on women''s education, women''s participation in public life as well as marginalized social groups.

Summary of project results

The project responded to the need to increase public knowledge about the role of women in Czech education, politics and history. It contributed to the visibility of personalities and places in Prague to the professional and general public. Discussions at the Jiřina Šiklová Library ("JŠL") raised the visibility of minority issues. Challenges were mainly the time required to process and digitise the archive and unfulfilled collaboration to host the exhibition with CAMP (Centre for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning) due to a change in CAMP''s production strategy.

Through the processing of the applicant''s library collection and archive, the project created interactive tools (digital map, search game, online encyclopedia of women, digitized archive) aimed at presenting physical places in the vicinity of the JŠL associated with the women''s movement and creating a context for the presentation of women''s history and education. In cooperation with the Prague 2 Municipality, Prague City Council, Prague Náplavky and other partners (CAMP, Multi-cultural Centre Praha, Museum of Czech Literature, Kampus Hybernská, Filosofical Faculty of the Charles University) 2 public exhibitions and 2 community events (Zažít město jinak) were held. Physical and virtual activities, including the implementation of 6 Discussion Tuesdays with JŠL, popularized the history of women''s education, women''s involvement in public life, representation of women and disadvantaged groups including ethnic and cultural minorities (Roma writers or LGBTQ+ people), and also enabled the connection between local businesses and the population of Prague 1 and 2.

4 interactive tools were created: a digitized archive, an online encyclopedia of women, a digital map, 2 exhibitions (in physical and virtual form), 6 discussions with the JŠL, 2 community events and a search game for schools, which helped to utilize the cultural heritage to popularize women''s history and education, and contributed to the cooperation of local entities (organizations, businesses and the local population). Attendance at the public events was 7343 people and 12 classes in total.

Summary of bilateral results

During the duration of the project, there were two personal visits between the project partners, which made it possible sharing good practices and know-how regarding the preservation and popularization of cultural heritage with regard to the local context of Iceland and the Czech Republic and the specifics of the work of both cooperating organizations. Partner involvement was for the Project Promoter, crucial in terms of acquiring professional know-how, especially for the digitization process, storage and organization of the Archive, textual and visual content and organization of the encyclopedia of women and implementation walks for schools. The findings from the visit of the Project Promoter´s representatives to Iceland were developed and applied to the needs of project outputs. The project outputs were presented to the partner with the aim of further the development of similar activities of the partner and as an inspiration for the inclusion of other popularization activities in his practice (e.g. online and offline exhibitions, public debates). The joint event of the project partners - discussion Tuesday on the topic "Gender equality in Iceland" was held as part of a partner visit in Prague.
