Description

In the area of waste management the Czech Republic belongs to one of the worst states in the EU – production of communal waste is high which brings significant economic and environmental drawbacks. Moreover, participation of the public and NGOs in preparation of related legislations has been very low. The proposed project will contribute to solving this situation by creating informal stakeholders platform, strengthening dialogue with public administration, advocacy work and public participation. In total, over 500 organizations, 200 decision makers and +50 000 citizens will be approached and informed.

Summary of project results

Due to the project realization, the increase of active role of municipalities, public and NGO’s at legislative decision making process was reached. The project was focused on three main scopes: 1. Participation of NGOs, municipalities and active citizens on 10 regional Waste Management Plans (rWMP). 2. Increasing public awareness and 3. Increasing awareness of relevant politicians by advocacy work. We printed brochure with examples of good practise in czech municipalities and short infosheet about possible technologies for decreasing landfilling. We had 18 meetings with key politicians, prepared 12 regional short evaluation of regional waste policies. We sent 2,5 thousands of informal e-mails and organize 8 workshops for NGOs and municipalities. We sent 15 press releases to media and have got more than 35 medial outputs. We have been able to join 10 volunteers in to the project. We increase public awareness in more than 50000 citizens, and 1618 directly involved in decision making process. Involvement of public was executed primary by project website www.hnutiduha.cz/chcirecyklovat, although not into the degree as we predicted – because of faster preparation of rWMP, than it was predicted. Thanks to project, wide public had been joined in to preparing rWMP. We sent 25 comments with 112 pages during the commenting rWMP and joining 1618 people to our main comments. Project inspired 50 municipalities, 30 NGOs, 9 active people, one political party and one senator to give their comments which were similar to ours. Two from fourteen regions set higher than minimal recycling targets in to their rWMP and proposal of new waste law contain our suggestion.
