Summary of project results

The project aimed to improve the media image of Roma and to decrease discrimination of Roma as media actors. We produced a beginning and an ending analysis of the current state of how Romani people are depicted in the Czech media, the results of which were presented as part of a public debate that was held on 28 April 2016 at the House of National Minorities (Vocelova 3 in Prague 2). On our website, www.romea.cz, we created a section called "Roma and the Media", launched a campaign to involve the public in eliminating discrimination and racism from the media, and launched a campaign called "Say it in Public!" that was aimed inside the Romani community to challenge members of the community to publicly share their opinions and positions (we created a blog and a video clip for the campaign). As part of the media watchdog project we consistently, systematically monitored media outputs on Romani topics and worked to correct them, collaborating with other journalists again by offering a media service to them and creating a database of Romani contacts. In collaboration with the College of Media and Journalism in Prague we implemented two practicums for students and a media training for publicly engaged Romani people who come into contact with the media with the aim of professionalizing their media appearances and intensifying their knowledge of the media scene and the necessary context. As part of our daily work, we also dedicated ourselves to our own media output, naturally, producing current events reporting on topics concerning the Romani minority (domestic and EU policy towards Romani people, the life of Romani people in different regions of the Czech Republic, the social welfare system, education, the impact of political decisions on the life of the Roma, and the issue of social exclusion
