Description
The aim of the project is to determine young Roma and local actors in Turulung to increase their capacity to intervene in their own community and to be aware of their role in changing the community of Turulung. They will be more active and supportive for the needs of vulnerable groups, in particular of the Roma minority, acquiring over time an increased capacity of knowing and using the local community’s resources.
Illiteracy and school dropout affect a large part of the population of Turulung, especially of the Roma community, diminishing their chances of social integration to a better life.
Due to historical experiences and cultural obstacles, many members of the Roma community face difficulties in following a long term educational project. An effort of the entire local community is needed to facilitate access to quality education for all community members.
A community based on positive and pro-active thinking, with an efficient management of community resources, with a large mobilization of members of the interethnic community of Turulung, will bring radical changes for 400 children, young people and adults, of which 120 Roma and 10 specialists (teachers and pedagogues). There will be: 4 community actions, 2 cultural events, 4 sports competitions. Access to community social services will be facilitated by expanding and improving social services within the Day Centre for Children in Turulung, increasing the quality of learning based on innovative education and training.
These activities will bring added value, as they have an impact in reducing intolerance and discrimination at the level of the local community and at the level of education of Roma children and young people. Regarding the attitude of parents, we propose a long term intervention, in order to obtain sustainable results, by ensuring access to education and preventing school dropout and by attending community programs such as afterschool, mentoring and vocational and school training.
