Description

Since its establishment in 2007 in Zagreb, Continental Croatia, Geolux has been at the forefront of developing high-tech electronic instruments for environmental monitoring. Specializing in research, development, and manufacturing, Geolux has carved out a niche for itself with its radar-based water level sensor and surface velocity radar instrument.

Now, in collaboration with Norwegian Partner, Cautus Geo, Geolux is embarking on an ambitious R&D project aimed at revolutionizing avalanche and landslide detection and tracking. With a focus on real-time monitoring, this solution is poised to make a significant impact in regions like Norway, where avalanches pose a significant threat.

Central to this system is a ground radar that enables the tracking of avalanche and landslide movements in real time. By providing early detection and tracking capabilities, the system enhances the effectiveness of search and rescue operations, potentially saving lives and minimizing damage.

Moreover, the system goes beyond avalanche detection by incorporating ground radar to track the movement of people and vehicles in avalanche-prone areas. This invaluable data allows for proactive measures to be taken, guiding search and rescue efforts based on ground movement patterns.

By harnessing cutting-edge technology and expertise, Geolux is not only advancing the field of environmental monitoring but also making a tangible difference in safeguarding communities from natural disasters. Summary of project results

Summary

Geolux''  main products are radar-based water level sensor and radar-based surface velocity radar instrument. Through this R&D project, partners were seeking to find a solution to sensing the avalances before they actually happen, and therefore prevent human and other damages. The solution, a real time avalanche and landslide detection and tracking system is primarily intended for Norway, but also other countries in which avalanches are common. 

The output of this project is  real time avalanche and landslide detection and tracking system.

The system also contains a ground radar for tracking movement of people and vehicle prior to the avalanche, so that search and rescue operations can be guided based on ground movement tracks.

To develop this output, the project promotor, together with it Norwegian partner carried out several activities, namely: 

Activity 1 – Development of radar sensors for avalanche monitoring, and for monitoring of people and vehicle movement on ground. 
Activity 2 – Development of the real-time communication module that can deliver avalanche warnings and ground movement tracks from any remote site to the control center

Activity 3 – Development of the central monitoring software application. 
(the main task of this application is to receive real time alerts and ground tracks from the site, and to assist search and rescue operations). 
Activity 4 - Development of robust and reliable stand alone power supply unit. 
The equipment for avalanche monitoring was installed on remote sites in Norway, where there is a threat of avalanches. These are typically remote locations between two towns/villages, as settlements are usually built away from the slopes with big avalanche threat. However, roads that connect towns do pass high-risk areas, because these locations are away from the towns, usually there is no electricity power available at the location. 

The solution that is new to the market has been successfully developed, therefore, output has been achieved. 

 

This project is estimated to generate significant increase of revenues and profit in 2024, in comparison to 2019. It is also expected to generate 7 new employments by 2024, in comparison to 2019, and 1 new intellectual property right application. 

Since 2024 has just started it is still not possible to report on the business results achieved. However, the solution (output) has been successfully developed and the application for IPR is in progress. 

Therefore, the beneficiaries of business results are partners of this project - Geolux and Cautus Geo. 

By timely alerting the society about the upcoming avalanche, the project will enable prevention of material damage, but above all, it will enable preventing human casualties. This is why final beneficiary of this solution will be society in general  

Summary of bilateral results

The activities on this project were divided in a way that Geolux in general was responsible for development of software, while Cautus Geo was responsible for development of hardware. The partnership was successful, and partners collaborated well. Both partners will have financial benefit from the project, and partners will share their IPRs.
