Description

The project is about gender discrimination, racist (physical / verbal) violence and the lack of visibility that exists in the daily lives of LGBTQI+ people[1]. There is a great lack of information on these issues and the visibility of these people is limited, both in the general population of Greece and at the local level in the region of Xanthi. For these needs, the project will work on two axes.
The first will be the provision of information and interaction around LGBTQI+ issues and the second will be the enhancing visibility of the identities living in the region of Xanthi.
The actions are designed to use a mixture of art and speech, making them more interactive and accessible to a large audience. That is, film screenings, speeches and open discussions, exhibitions, audiovisual performances on relevant topics are included. The artists and speakers chosen to take part in the activities have a sensitivity to these issues, highlighting the means by their subject matter, belonging to the LGBTQI+ community themselves.
In addition, during the project, there will be campaign updates, either in print or electronically, for the public.
Upon completion of the project, 500 people will be informed in order to raise awareness about gender, identity and LGBTQI+ rights. Furthermore, there will be visibility enhancement and support for LGBTQI+ individuals. At the same time, supporting tools will be given to the participants of the project and to those who attend it, in order to develop their voluntary support and to create similar actions in the future.
The project will be implemented by Black Box in collaboration with the Quaesura team.

[1] LGBTQI+: is an abbreviation and means lesbians, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex and other identities.

Summary of project results

The project raised the issues of gender discrimination, racist (physical/ verbal) violence and the lacking of visibility in the everyday life of LGBTQI+ individuals. Lack of awareness on these issues was observed and the need to enhance the visibility of LGBTQI+ people in the region of Xanthi. The project took effect in two distinct axes: the first was to provide information and interaction around LGBTQI+ issues and the second was to enhance the visibility of the people themselves, living in the region of Xanthi.

The actions were designed to work on these two axes and used an alloy of art and speech, which allowed them to be more interactive and accessible to a large part of the audience. Thus, including film screenings, speeches and open discussions, exhibitions, audio-visual performances on relevant topics. The artists and speakers belonging themselves to the LOATKI+ community, were selected to participate in the actions as they have a sensitivity on these issues, highlighting them, through their topics.

It is estimated that 500 people were informed in order to raise awareness on issues of gender, identity and LGBTQI+ rights. Through this induction, a direction was created in the mitigation of discrimination and stigmatization. Support tools were given to those who attended the project activities, enhancing visibility and supporting LGBTQI+ individuals.

The project was successfully completed and followed its objectives as originally planned. The local community’s need for such actions emerged. There has been substantial encouragement of LGBTQI+ individuals and several allies have been added to the community''s potential to defend its rights in the future.
