Description

The project “Todos à Vela no Alqueva” means to solve: Dissociation between the leisure image of Baixo Alentejo and nautical activities; Lack of an aquatic leisure culture; River and lagoon resources lack of knowledge by the population, mostly by the young people; Low regard for the “water” resource; Scarce knowledge by new generations about the Ocean.

The proposed project intends to face those challenges through initiatives that encourage a behavior change on the young people about the “water” resource, such in taking advantage of its potential on the aquatic sports practice, as on the behavior changes that promote the sustainability of that resource. The project activities include a meeting of Sailing Schools, first-time Sailing and nautical sports workshops for children and young people, initiation to the aquatic environment actions for teachers, and an Ocean Literacy awareness campaign. The main deliverables are the edition of the practical guide to safety standards, Agenda 2022-The Ocean depends on all of us and the guide “To discover the rivers of my land”. Through the development of nautical activities and raising awareness, this project aims to promote the awareness of citizens, especially the school community, about main problems that the Ocean faces, stimulating changes in the behavior of the youngest and the development of skills appropriated to challenges of the “blue” growth. The activities encourage the ability to get to know the “water” resource, explore it and preserve it, initially in the local context and then replicate this know-how at a global level. The target audience for the present project is mainly the local public, although it also involves audiences from other regions, specifically in the activity related to the Sailing Schools Meeting and in the awareness campaign. The main beneficiaries of the project will be children and young students included in nautical activities and in skills promotion activities for Ocean Literacy.

Summary of project results

The project “Todos à Vela no Alqueva” means to solve the following problems:

- Dissociation between the leisure image of Baixo Alentejo and nautical activities;

- Lack of an aquatic leisure culture;

- River and lagoon resources lack of knowledge by the population, mostly by the young people;

- Low regard for the “water” resource;

- Scarce knowledge by new generations about the Ocean.

The project intended to face those challenges through initiatives that encourage a behavior change on the young people about the “water” resource, such in taking advantage of its potential on the aquatic sports practice, as on the behavior changes that promote the sustainability of that resource.

The project activities include a meeting of Sailing Schools, first-time Sailing and nautical sports workshops for children and young people, initiation to the aquatic environment actions for teachers, and an Ocean Literacy awareness campaign.

The main deliverables are the edition of the practical guide to safety standards, Agenda 2022 - The Ocean depends on all of us and the guide “The rivers of my land”.

Through the development of nautical activities and raising awareness, this project promoted the awareness of citizens, especially the school community, about main problems that the Ocean faces, stimulating changes in the behavior of the youngest and the development of skills appropriated to challenges of the “blue” growth. The activities included in the project encourage the ability to get to know the “water” resource, explore it and preserve it, initially in the local context and then replicate this know-how at a global level.

During the project, 804 students participated in school nautical sports activities and an awareness campaign was carried out that contributed to the improvement of ocean literacy skills.
