Description

The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the municipality of Karviná and thus reduce the negative impacts of this change on its inhabitants. Part of the creation of the strategy will be a detailed analysis of the risks of the territory, on the basis of which a system of effective measures will be created. To develop an effective adaptation strategy, it is necessary to carry out a risk analysis at the outset to identify thermal islands in the city and to correlate them with socio-economic and demographic statistics, green status and other indicators. This risk analysis will be a fundamental basis for the development of an effective adaptation strategy, which will include targeted measures to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on the city and to make Karviná more responsible for climate protection.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project of the adaptation strategy of the town of Karviná is to achieve a lower threat to people and nature by adverse manifestations of climate change. In order to develop an effective adaptation strategy, it was necessary to carry out a risk analysis at the beginning, which made it possible to identify heat islands in the statutory town of Karviná and correlate them with socio-economic and demographic statistics, green conditions and other indicators. This risk analysis was a fundamental basis for the creation of an effective adaptation strategy, which includes targeted measures to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on the city and to increase the responsibility of the statutory city of Karviná in terms of climate protection. One of the most vulnerable parts of the village is undoubtedly the city center, which is particularly sensitive to high summer temperatures and drought, as there is a large proportion of built-up and impermeable areas. Local housing estates also face similar problems. We also identified three sites that are problematic in terms of torrential rains and subsequent floods.

The approved Adaptation Strategy serves as one of the initial documents in the processing of other conceptual or strategic documents in the city. The project identified measures that the city of Karviná should implement in order to reduce the vulnerability of the city and its surroundings to climate change. In the implementation of the project, we also used the experience of our Polish partner city Jastrzębie-Zdrój, where we drew examples of good practice. The proposed measures include, for example, the revitalization of watercourses in which the riverbed is clogged, the share of permeable areas is increased, the revitalization of greenery or the support of interest in the revitalization and use of inner blocks.

Our future is Karviná, which is actively reducing its contribution to climate change: it manages energy and waste efficiently, uses the maximum amount of renewable resources and clean transport, and in 2050 is climate neutral.
