Description
The aim of the Project is to create an ecological classroom from the school campus, in which teaching will take place. The Project also aims to encourage and change the behavior of pupils and the public towards climate change so that their behavior is more environmentally friendly. The target groups of the Project are pupils and pedagogical staff of the school, parents of pupils, public - residents of the City of Šahy and surrounding municipalities, including disabled and physically handicapped citizens.
The following activities will be implemented within the Project:
- Creation / updating of educational materials to ensure the education of pupils in the area of mitigation and adaptation to climate change,
- Implementation of hard technical measures – Campus as a classroom for climate change. This activity will consist of Increasing the proportion of greenery (planting of useful plants), water retention measures (building of bioretention systems), building blue infrastructure elements, increasing the infiltration capacity of the territory (replacement of a concrete surface with a permeable surface) and with a vegetation surface.
- Educational activities and awareness raising activities Student Science Conference and Earth Day.
All activities will be interconnected and will be pilot tested in the lessons of the Project.
There are 2 Slovak Project Partners involved in the Project: Grammar School, 17. November Str., Topoľčany and Grammar School of J. Szondyho with teaching conducted in Hungarian from the City of Šahy.
Summary of project results
The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:
- systematic education of students on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on water retention, greenery, hydroregulation cycle,
- implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to reach increasing the proportion of greenery, water retention measures, building blue infrastructure elements (building a pond), increasing the infiltration capacity of the territory.
Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:
- Planting fruit trees and greenery,
- Water retention measures - building of bioretention systems - rain garden,
- Building blue infrastructure elements - the aim of the measure is to lift water from the roof of the main building into the pond,
- Increasing the infiltration capacity of the territory,
- Environmental protection in practical life,
- Environmental education - innovation of optional content subject,
- Environmental education included in topics of natural science subjects.
Overall, 4 physical climate change responsive measures were carried out in school and school campus, 1 500 students participated the awareness raising campaign and 15 open access education materials were created.
The Project reached more than 1 thousand of persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on students and general public as beneficiaries.
