Description

The goal of the project is to increase the influence of the civil society in the process of amending the Slovenian forest legislation in order to ensure sustainable and close to nature forest management, in which all forest functions, which are in public interest (ecological, social and economic) will be balanced. The project will inform the general public and experts about current events on this field and promote the value of the various functions of Slovenian forests. It will analyze the attitudes of the Slovenian public toward forest and different forest management options. The results will be used to prepare a targeted educational campaign and will be presented to decision makers, so that they can verify the legitimacy of their decisions. NGOs in the field of nature conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development will be joined in the Coalition for the forest, which will actively monitor and participate in the process of new forest legislation preparation and adoption. The Coalition will prepare amendments to the new forest legislation through a wide and transparent civil dialogue that will be presented to decision makers.

Summary of project results

The goal of the project was to increase the influence of the civil society in the process of amending the Slovenian forest legislation in order to ensure sustainable and close to nature forest management, in which all forest functions, which are in public interest (ecological, social and economic) would be balanced. The project informed the general public and experts about current events on this field and promote the value of the various functions of Slovenian forests. It analyzed the attitudes of the Slovenian public toward forest and different forest management options which was the first analysis of this kind. The results were used to prepare a targeted educational campaign and presented to decision makers. The project created a coalition of NGOs working on environmental issues - Coalition for the forest, and prepared several joint actions (statements, press conferences, advocacy campaigns etc.). During the implementation of the project, the government adopted the new legislation on how to manage state owned forests. The Coalition for the forest played an important role during this process, although not all of their suggestions were accepted. The Coalition continues to exist.
