The fund's objective is to promote sustainable development in the border region by strengthening local and regional authorities' capability to carry out cooperation projects in the area.

To achieve this, the fund has financed projects within a variety of fields, all with the purpose of furthering economic development, development of human resources, protection of the environment and improving local infrastructure. The supported small-scale projects involve the local population in cross-border activities.

Of the 39 supported projects, several concern environmental protection and cross-border initiatives in the fields of healthcare and sustainable tourism.
Among the supported projects is an initiative of the twin communities of Tarpa in Eastern Hungary and Mezővári in Ukraine. Mezővári and Tarpa have had long-standing close relations going back several hundred years. The support from the fund has enabled the local government of Tarpa to enhance the historical, cultural, musical and sporting cooperation with its Ukrainian counterpart.

As part of the project, 4 traditional tourism festivals will take place, working to preserve the local customs and to keep the memory of historical events and traditions alive. The project also includes creative camps for children and the dissemination of publicity materials highlighting the history and sights of the community.
