The main aim of the Norway Grants and nuclear power plant project in the Duna-Mecsek region in Hungary has been to develop basic infrastructure in order to enable access to public buildings for all. Through the project, medical offices, schools, rest homes and mayors’ offices in 21 towns and villages have been upgraded to provide equal access for everybody.

Equal opportunities

In addition to improving possibilities for everyone to work and function on an equal basis, it has been a project goal to increase the general knowledge of the challenges disabled people meet in their everyday lives. The project targets disabled, hard of hearing or deaf, visually impaired and blind, mentally challenged and autistic or multiply disabled persons.Over 60 towns and villages were eligible to apply for support, and the project promoter, the Duna-Mecsek Regional Development Foundation, received 38 applications and chose in the end 21 of the communities.

Nuclear energy

The foundation was initiated by the nuclear power company in the region, the Paksi Atomerimó Zrt, and established in order to support regional development projects and local communities which are involved in the nuclear energy industry. The foundation also supports private companies to establish relevant infrastructures and enables participation on social events.
