Wejherowo County in Poland, counting 180,000 people, has received a €1 million grant through the EEA Grants to its comprehensive sports activities project to be implemented by local secondary schools. Ten public schools will over a three year time span develop their sports and recreational infrastructures, organise 1,200 extracurricular sports activities, and carry out more than 200 sports and recreational events for 18,000 children. Children and young people in the region will be able to partake in activities ranging from board games and table tennis to hurdle races, football and long distance running.
Building work at five of the ten schools began during the summer holidays in 2007. Of the ten planned open access recreation zones, to include basketball, handball and volleyball fields as well as tennis courts and running tracks, two have already been opened for use. One of these schools, situated in Rumia, has also developed sports facilities for children with special needs, with specific areas seeking to optimize children’s stimulation through use of surfaces made from artificial bark, moss, cobbles, sand and grass.
