Description

Juvenile delinquency is a worrying phenomenon in Prahova County. Only in 2013, 304 cases of crimes committed by children were reported, 209 of them carried out by schoolchildren. The project will establish a new service, namely a centre of intervention, counselling and support for children at risk. Juvenile delinquents and street children will be involved in activities which will prevent them from repeating crimes, discourage school dropout and support their reintegration. Also, the project intends to develop means to support the children's formal education through school tutoring activities. The project envisages the development of the children's abilities by setting up non-formal education circles and getting the children involved in extracurricular activities. Special attention shall be paid to the professional development of specialists who work with children in residential care units. 230 children (35 Roma), 113 youth and 70 parents/tutors will be involved in the activities.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to improve children at risk situation and to increase their social inclusion.It targeted children and youths included in the child protection system and vulnerable children, mainly juvenile delinquents and street children from Prahova County.In this purpose it was developed a new service in the project promoter`s portfolio, namely Intervention, counseling and support Center for children at risk.This service developed its activities in a building rehabilitated within the project and ensured specialized intervention for about 555 children and youths, divided in two categories of beneficiaries: juvenile delinquents and street children.At the same time, the project developed activities to support about 245 children from child protection system to improve their formal education by school tutoring activities ( Romania language, Mathematics and English), setting up some non-formal education groups, by developing abilities of children by getting them involved in extracurricular activities (music, dance, theatre, etc.).The school tutoring activities were sustained in each child protection unit by students from Gas and Petroleum University (partner in the project). Also in each child protection unit there were set up non-formal education groups (circles) which were equipped accordingly for different activities like handcraft, pottery, carpentry, tailoring, jewelry crafting, gardening, cooking, journalism, IT. They personnel from each center was trained to sustain each of this activity. Also, some of talented children and youths attended more artistic activities, in order to develop their skills like instrument playing (canto, piano and harmonica) classes, acting classes, drawing/painting and dance classes. There were also organized within the project, summer camps and trips were most of the children involved in the project activities attended.A special attention was paid to the professional development of the specialists who work with the children in residential care units, for that purpose 93 persons attended a specialization course. Altogether, 165 specialists were involved in the activities of the project and improved their working skills through the project.An awareness campaign was organized among the children and youths from the child protection system, about the juvenile delinquent problem.Also, after the Plus call, the promoter developed a new service addressed to the beneficiary, a Day care center for developing independent life skills.
