In a short video recently released by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research, you can learn more about the challenges surrounding history teaching in divided societies such as Cyprus.
The Association receives support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to establish a Home for Cooperation in the UN controlled buffer-zone in Nicosia, which will function as an international research and educational centre with the aim of bringing the island's two communities closer together. A special emphasis will be given to the ways of teaching the island's history.
"We're working a lot with educating teachers and on methodological issues of how to teach history, and we are also bringing teachers from both communities together," explains Rena Choplarou, Board Member of the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research, which is carrying out the project.
In the video, you can also experience some of the celebrations that took place in the buffer-zone as the renovation works to the house that will host the new bi-communal centre started in February 2010.
