Pécs is the 5th largest city in Hungary. The medieval town was first mentioned in 1871 under the name Quinque Basilicae which refers to the fact that material from 5 old Christian churches was used to build the city.

The present cathedral was rebuilt around the year 1100 after a fire. In addition to restoration works on the cathedral, Norway supports the renovation of the Dom Square buildings, the Prebendal Archives and Palace of Episcopate. These are buildings in the classical baroque style.
Pécs today is a pleasant university town. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, with the oldest archaeological findings dating back 6000 years. In 2010, Pécs is one of the European Capitals of Culture along with Essen and Istanbul.
