Hydrotherapy, which involves the use of water for pain-relief and treating illness, is known as an effective way of rehabilitation for both physically and mentally disabled persons.

On 25 June 2010, the Bratislava self-governing region marked the official opening of the first complex hydrotherapy centre in Bratislava, made possible by €1.8 million in support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The centre is located at the social service home Gaudeaums and now offers three modern swimming pools.

In addition to increasing the quality of life for people with mental, physical or multiple disabilities, post-traumatic conditions or autistic diagnosis, the new center aims to be a place for social integration. A key part of the project is that hydrotherapy will be provided in swimming pools that are open to the public.
