Description
The main objective of the Project is the implementation of measures that will contribute to mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The particular measures will create a synergic effect and will be carried out under the following activities:
- Development of the Action plan on climate change mitigation and adaptation (incl. analysis of climate conditions, risk analysis, analysis of the territory vulnerability to climate change, monitoring of areas with rapid water drain and extreme erosion)
- Investments in buildings (e. g. increase in energy efficiency in selected kindergartens, shading with exterior vertical greenery, green walls of the container stands, conversion of asphalt pitches to bright areas)
- Energy saving solutions and smart solutions (installation of solar lightning in the parks, installation of air quality sensors and a combined sensor of meteorological parameters, application for monitoring of air quality in the town)
- Transport (e-car and e-bicycles for the Town Hall employees)
- Green and blue infrastructure (e. g. planting a green island on a crossroad, planting of meadow communities, installation of insect houses, placing of flower pots)
- Waste management (introduction of the biodegradable waste collection from complex housing construction)
- Water management (bioretention system with functional vegetation for catching and draining rainwater from slopes)
- Soft activities (e. g. education programme for primary school pupils and secondary school students and the public, establishment of a “permanent exhibition exposition” on the implementation of measures and education on reducing the impact of CO2 on the environment in the town etc.).
A Donor Project Partner – the Ullensvang kommune is involved and will cooperate in developing and providing know-how in the preparation of the action plan. The Project is intended for the general public (inhabitants and visitors of the City of Brezno) with special focus on the elderly people.
Summary of project results
The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:
- preparation of the Action plan,
- increase in energy efficiency of the nursery school street Hradby and Bozeny Nemcovej in Brezno,
- smart solutions,
- energy saving solutions,
- transport,
- green and blue infrastructure,
- waste management,
- water management.
Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:
- approval of the Action plan for mitigation and adaptation,
- complex refurbishment of the nursery school street Hradby and Bozeny Nemcovej in Brezno to increase energy efficiency,
- installation of air quality sensors and a combined sensor of meteorological parameters,
- intelligent exterior lightning,
- purchase of an electric car and bicycles for the Town Hall employees,
- planting a green island, plan sculpture, meadow communities, flower pots, trees, vertical garden and green wall,
- purchase of collection containers for biodegradable waste,
- construction of bioretention system,
Overall, 25 climate change measures were carried out in the region of Brezno.
The Project reached completion of 1 Action plan for mitigation and adaptation to the Climate Change with an impact on 0.36 % of Slovak population benefiting from living in more climate change resilient and responsive urban areas.
