Description
The aim of the project is the operation and professionalization of a tailoring workshop focused on the products of traditional Roma embroidery with the subsequent establishment of a social enterprise. A significant benefit of the project is the direct impact on the economic strengthening of the position of the target vulnerable group, as the project will increase the employability and employment of Roma women living in the village of Rankovce. Other benefits of the project are the preservation of tradition and the development of traditional Roma embroidery skills, the acquisition of practical skills and social competencies in project participants and the promotion of a positive example and richness of Roma culture towards the majority of the society. The project will contribute to the elimination of prejudices and stereotypes among the majority of the population in relation to the Roma. The association plans to involve 40 Roma women and girls from the marginalized Roma community in the project.
Summary of project results
From our point of view, the Romani SUV project was necessary and useful, it contributed greatly to the professionalization of the Romani SUV tailoring workshop focused on traditional Roma embroidery. The realization of the project resulted in the stabilization of woman workers working in the workshop. They underwent intensive training of tailoring and embroidery skills. The project has also created a space for learning the soft skills and social competences needed to be included in the labour market. We have made a major contribution to increasing the employability of Roma women involved in the project. All women involved in the project had no work experience prior to the project. One of the activities of the project was also the preparation of a business plan, which is the basis for the registration of a social enterprise. An important activity was the operation of the tailor''s workshop itself as well as marketing activities. The products that were created in the tailor''s workshop were presented at various events and distributed to public. A total of 94 people took part in the project. We have established cooperation with the municipality of Herľany, where they have allowed us to sell products at tourist attractive geysers. We passed on our experience to the village of Vtáčkovce. The mayor of the village was inspired by our workshop and created a similar initiative in Vtáčkovce village. We have also involved Roma women themselves in dealing with representatives of the municipalities. Our long-term effort is to empower them to develop their communities. We also carried out motivational and educational activities for teenagers from Roma communities. During the project, we cooperated with the professional fashion workshop Romani design from Hungary. We were involved in the creation of an international collection containing elements of Roma, Hungarian, Slovak and Czech culture. The pandemic period has forced us to respond to the challenges and current needs of communities. Although unplanned, we started making cotton masks. These were distributed to the poorest families in the Kecerovce-Olšava region.
