Description
The project addresses the multifaceted challenge of young people’s lack of awareness about discrimination on the basis of race or ethnicity, religion, sex, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. Plenty of young people engage in sociopolitical activities (workshops, lectures, demonstrations, awareness-raising campaigns, etc.) as active citizens. But a significant portion of young people are simply uninterested in these activities; their lack of awareness perpetuates itself. The goal of the project is to work with the portion of politically inactive young people, so that they begin to care about human rights and be against different violations of minorities’ rights. This will be done through developing a program of three philosophy workshops. The results of this specifically formulated workshops for the politically inactive young people will be. work on underlying causes for discriminatory beliefs and actions; as such the programme functions on the primary area of human rights and equal treatment with prevention of discrimination and will increase support for civic education and human rights. Our indirect target groups are all marginalised groups in Slovenia, who are subjected to various forms of discrimination. The beneficiery of the project are young individuals, involved in the project, mariginalized groups, subjected to discrimination in Slovenia, and the general public.
There were 2 partners involved in the project. The University of Ljubljana - Faculty of Education has enabled the project applicant direct access to its students and provided a testing environment for the implementation of workshops. The second partner - Association Brez limita has long-lasting experiences in working with youth and implementing workshops with and for young people.
Summary of project results
Due to considerable study and work commitments, young people run out of time to follow and respond to the political issues of our time – if they are interested in them at all. All too often, they feel that they are not directly affected by social shifts and political developments.
We will carry out philosophical workshops on current events for students, especially those studying natural sciences who do not encounter the humanities very often in their studies. We will discuss the history and philosophy of science and its errors, as well as the meaning and responsibility of their future professions.
We will help them see their future profession through the lens of the social and political situation, although the connection may not be obvious at first glance. We will teach them to read and understand content that they find alien and uninteresting. Through philosophical reflection on ethical issues, they will be able to strengthen interdisciplinary thinking and broaden their horizons, which will later help them in the labor market.
