Description
The main objective of the project is to increase the competitiveness of Vimetco Extrusion by installing an automated packaging line, creating a semi-automatic process flow and improving employees'' working conditions. Currently, the packing and completion process is done 100% manually.
The manual packaging is an inefficient process in the production of aluminum profiles and represents a bottleneck in utilization of the production capacity. The manual packing causes defective products, waste generated by human errors and is a very labor-intensive process creating operational difficulties such as work force shortages due to injuries and high personnel turnover. The automatic line represents a completely new and innovative process for the company that will fundamentally change the production process and will create the premises to implement a semi-automatic process flow that works in FIFO (first in, first out) system with performances and control keys easily predictable and measurable by the management of the process. Key activities include:
- Automatic packaging line design and implementation.
- Acquisition and commissioning of the automatic packaging line.
- Project management.
- Publicity to ensure the visibility of the project.
Expected outcomes include an annual decrease of CO2 emissions from 243 tonnes (2019) to 158 tonnes (2023) and estimated annual collection of waste for re-use or recycling from 45.190kg (2019) to 36.152kg (2023).
The project is implemented in partnership with International Development Norway (IDN). IDN will assist Vimetco Extrusion in designing and implementing the automatic packaging and logistics solution. Software Operational Management and Simulation tools will be used to optimize the packaging line layout. In parallel Lean Manufacturing with Value Stream Mapping (VSM) will be used to optimize the process. By integrating Lean concepts and principles into the design throughout the facility the company will improve flow and capacity.
Summary of project results
By implementing this project, Vimetco intended to increase its competitiveness.

Following the implementation of the project, Vimetco installed an automatic packing line. This is a new and innovative process for the company that has fundamentally changed the production process.
Vimetco has inceased its productivity and competitiveness following the implementation of the project. The project also had a positive impact on the environment, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions and reduction of annual collection of waste for re-use or recycling.
Summary of bilateral results
IDN has assisted Vimetco Extrusion in designing and implementing the automatic packaging and logistics solution.
