Description

The main objective of the project is implementation of a 0,994 MWp photovoltaic system in order to assure electricity from renewable resources for the tires production process and to reduce CO2 emissions. The group Michelin is committed to achieve 100% “all sustainable” tires. Energy is a significant part of the tire together with rubber and other inputs in the manufacturing process, therefore green energy is foreseen to be purchased or produced for own consumption. The company conducted a Feasibility Study from which it resulted that the installation of a photovoltaic plant has obvious advantages due to high energy production efficiency, the use of renewable energy and the reduction of energy costs.
The technical solution proposes the developing of a 0,994 MWp photovoltaic plant, including 1.824 modules for the “New Logistics” building’s roof. The modules can be installed on the roof, with an inclination angle of 15 degrees. Due to the diversity of roof types, two mounting systems have been proposed for the photovoltaic modules: direct mounting in the covers, or fixing with ballast, without penetration. These structures are specially developed for installation on various types of roofs without compromising their integrity and functionality. There will be no injection of electricity in the national grid as the electricity supplied by the panels is much lower than the hourly consumption on site. The photovoltaic plant will produce 1.041 MWh/year for own consumption. The implementation of renewable energy will allow the company to decrease its annual CO2 emission by 318 tonnes of CO2 eq. per year.
The investment targeted by this project has a positive impact on the company. Its implementation reduces the energy consumption from conventional sources, provides energy cost economy and gives a partial energy autonomy. Value is also created through the improvement of the company’s image by using renewable energy sources, and by producing tires with less climate impact.

Summary of project results

The main problem of the Project Promoter was the high dependency on the conventional energy sources, including the electricity purchased from the national grid, which represents a high cost for the company.

The project consisted in implementation of a photovoltaic system placed on the ground, with a total installed capacity of 0,998 MWp, in order to assure electricity from renewable sources for the daily activities of the Project Promoter and to reduce CO2 emissions.

Outcomes:
a) Estimated annual CO2 emission reductions: 318 tonns of CO2 eq./year;
b) Energy produced from other renewable sources in MWh/year: 1.041 MWh/year;

Outputs:
a) Installed capacity for production of electricity (in MW): 0,998 MW;
b) Number of new installations for production of renewable energy: 1 photovoltaic installation.

Other indicators:
- Number of staff trained in the project: 5 employees trained for adequate operation and maintenance.

The proposed photovoltaic system will contribute to decreasing the dependency on conventional  sources by locally producing green energy which will be used for own consumption. The implementation of renewable energy will allow the company to decrease its annual CO2 emissions with estimated 365 tonnes of CO2 eq. per year.
