Description
Ensuring sustainable exploitation of the geothermal water field is planned to be developed. As the utilization of low- to medium temperature geothermal resources is practically emission free, the replacement of fossil fuels by geothermal energy will lead to decreased greenhouse gas emissions and can also lead to better air quality.
By using heat pumps and re- inject the used water back into the reservoir, the sustainability of the resource will be ensured, and the energy stored in the geothermal water will be efficiently exploited. At the same time, in order to provide the entire energy needed for the neighboring buildings in the peak period, the energy input from the District Heating System (DHS) network of the city will be used as well.
The main objective of the project is to increase the capacity for the supply of renewable energy, having as its source geothermal energy. The main activities of the project include:
- Equipment supply
- Construction works for the building
- Technical assistance
- Installation of thermal networks.
- Design services.
Expected outcomes include an estimated annual decrease of CO2 emissions by 6.188 tonnes and annual energy production of 24.683,54 MWh. The project is estimated to generate 5 new jobs.
The project is implemented in partnership with the Icelandic company Mannvit hf. Mannvit hf is an international consultancy firm in the fields of engineering, technical services and innovation. They will have an important contribution to the project by transferring know-how in the specific field of geothermal energy use. They will evaluate test results, check and evaluate data received and analyze the capacity and condition of the data received. They will also review the system design concept and provide technical consultancy.
Summary of project results
Through this project, Oradea Municipality aimed to significantly boost the use of renewable energy by harnessing its geothermal potential. The initiative focused on tapping into the natural geothermal resources available in the region to provide a sustainable and efficient energy source. By integrating geothermal energy systems, the project sought to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and lower carbon emissions. This strategic move not only promotes environmental sustainability but also supports the municipality''s long-term energy goals. Ultimately, the project enhances the community''s access to clean and renewable energy.
With the support of the EEA and Norway grants, the municipality successfully installed a geothermal plant, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy use. The project encompassed several key activities, starting with the supply of specialized equipment necessary for the geothermal system. Construction works were carried out to build the facility housing the plant, ensuring it met all technical and safety standards. Technical assistance was provided throughout the project to ensure optimal installation and operation of the geothermal systems. Additionally, thermal networks were installed to distribute the geothermal energy efficiently across the designated areas. Design services played a crucial role in planning and executing the project, ensuring that all components were integrated seamlessly. These efforts collectively aimed to harness geothermal energy, reduce carbon emissions, and promote renewable energy use within the municipality.
Following the project''s implementation, annual CO2 emissions are expected to decrease by 6.188 tonnes, significantly benefiting the environment. The geothermal power plant will generate 24,683.54 MWh of energy each year, showcasing the effectiveness of renewable energy. Additionally, the project has created 5 new jobs, contributing to local employment. By reducing its dependence on conventional polluting energy sources, the municipality is moving towards greater sustainability. Overall, these outcomes highlight the project''s positive impact on both the environment and the community.
