Description

This project aims to valorize one of the most important photographic archives in Romania built by the art historian, photographer and former Director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Romania, Mihai Oroveanu. This project was partly triggered by the lack of specialized institutions dedicated to photography and the study of image culture. Even if photography has become a quintessential part of our everyday life, there is little concern and reflection regarding the role of the image in society as well as its historical evolution. Many collections and photographic archives have been dismantled, destroyed or have lost their initial identity because there has been no strategy designed by Romanian public cultural institutions to preserve them. Through this initiative, Salonul de proiecte will organize a series of exhibitions of contemporary art and other connected events, starting from the original items existing in the Oroveanu photographic archive. Furthermore, Salonul de proiecte will act in a professional and creative way in order to digitize, preserve and publish online a number of archival photographs and to establish innovative methods of engaging and attracting the public in this venture. During the unfolding of the project, new jobs will be created and the members of the implementation team will benefit from intense training sessions, hence increasing their professionalization. The project sets out to relocate the entire archive into the exhibition space of Salonul de proiecte, working with it on several levels so that the public can access it on a constant basis and in a consistent manner.

Summary of project results

The promoter''s capacity increased as a result of the project, through the creation of 5 jobs and professional improvement for 5 employees. The project results include the organization of 9 artistic events attended by 2000 people. The 9 contemporary art interventions, supported by 3 Romanian artists, 3 artists from Norway and 3 international artists, combined historical photography and innovative artistic and curatorial practices. This approach aimed to contribute to the public visibility of the digital archive and to its positioning in the public consciousness. Due to its historical and cultural relevance, the digitized archive benefits from a wider visibility through the use of various and current tools, specific to the theory and practice of contemporary art.

Summary of bilateral results

The cooperation involved the exchange of experience, know-how and best practices between the two partners - the transfer of expertise, training activities and training dedicated to the implementation team in Bucharest. They contribute to increasing the organizational capacity of the promoter, supporting collaboration with Norwegian artists who participated in the activities held in Bucharest (online).
