Description
In Romania, at present, there is an insufficient level of information, responsibility and active involvement (both at the community level and at the level of the decision-making process) in actions to stop global warming and / or to reduce the effects of climate change. Future projections related to sustainability and climate change clearly reflect the need for intervention and for major changes in many dimensions of society. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the 2030 Agenda, almost 5 years after they were launched by the UN states, are still at the level of strategic planning but not implemented at the local level. A.R.T. Fusion, together with the Foundation New Horizons and Romanian Scouts proposes through "Future through Action" the stimulation of the active participation process in the decision-making process at local and regional level in Romania, regarding the Agenda2030, by increasing the degree of active responsibility of the youth, of the youth leaders and the teachers in Romania regarding sustainability and climate change. This goal will be achieved by forming an active network of 44 trainers (teachers and youth leaders) in non-formal education focused on developing global citizenship competencies (with an emphasis in relation with the 2030 Agenda, climate change, sustainable lifestyle, and the participation mechanisms for public decisions making processes in this regard) among 1200 young people between 15 and 30 out, of 16 localities in Romania. These young people, together with trainers, will be able to develop citizen participation activities and contribute to the advocacy dimension of the project meant to influence how the 2030 Agenda implementation strategy is implemented by the authorities in the 16 target localities. The aim is also to create a multi-sectoral working group to support and stimulate the prioritization of the 2030 Agenda by the authorities.
Summary of project results
In Romania, at present, there is an insufficient level of information, responsibility and active involvement (both at the community level and at the level of the decision-making process) in actions to stop global warming and / or to reduce the effects of climate change. Future projections related to sustainability and climate change clearly reflect the need for intervention and for major changes in many dimensions of society. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the 2030 Agenda, almost 5 years after they were launched by the UN states, are still at the level of strategic planning but not implemented at the local level.
Four training sessions on global citizenship and local advocacy played a crucial role in participant development. As a result, a network of 57 trainers was created, with 40 remaining actively involved. Additionally, two physical network meetings were organized in 2023.
Fifty-seven series of global education workshops were carried out, reaching 1,298 young participants from 19 localities. These workshops provided participants with in-depth knowledge of climate change, responsible consumption, and the 2030 Agenda, equipping them to drive change both personally and within their communities. These workshops were grounded in a global citizenship curriculum.
A report assessing the implementation status of the SDGs from the 2030 Agenda in 19 localities was drafted and shared with 200 stakeholders. Two dissemination events, held in 2022 and 2023, attracted 125 stakeholders.
Through various activities, 12 schools/high schools, 11 local Scout centers, and one association became more sustainable, directly engaging 1,126 individuals. Fifty-three multi-actor consultation meetings were held across 17 target localities, involving 628 participants and leading to the conclusion of 77 collaboration agreements.
Sixteen local advocacy and information campaigns were implemented, engaging 10,998 citizens and 441 ambassadors of the 2030 Agenda. Additionally, five fundraising campaigns and 14 local fundraising activities were conducted.
The long-term impact is reflected in educating and mobilizing young people, creating a conscious and responsible generation capable of promoting sustainability and positive change at the community level.
