Description
The GendER@UC EEA Grants project aims to reinforce the integration of the gender perspective in Universidade de Coimbra research processes and content by implementing a set of measures promoting Gender Equality (GE), through the training of researchers, the on changing the procedures of the R&D Units, includes the actions of removing barriers to participation and promoting GE; and the change in the production and communication of knowledge includes actions of gender analysis with a view to the elimination of stereotypes and gender biases.
What will it achieve?
- combat vertical / horizontal segregation in the research career of women through mentoring and support for the research career;
- mitigating organizational barriers to access and career advancement for women in R&D Units through diagnostic actions, support / training of key stakeholders and adaptation of institutional procedures;
- develop inclusive research practices, promoting excellence in scientific research, through training actions, review of templates and monitoring practices of researchers;
- promoting inclusive communication in the research process.
Summary of project results
The GendER@UC EEA Grants Project aimed to promote gender equality in research at the University of Coimbra. It focused on empowering female researchers, removing barriers in R&D units, and eliminating gender biases in research methods and communication. Key actions included mentoring, improving institutional procedures, fostering inclusive research practices, and promoting inclusive communication.
This project focused on promoting gender equality in research and academia through several initiatives designed to create equal opportunities for women and men in the workplace. It aimed to integrate gender perspectives into research practices, leadership, and communication while addressing barriers faced by women in their careers.
Key efforts included mentorship programs, training sessions, and networking opportunities to support women researchers. Workshops were held to raise awareness about gender and leadership in research, and practical resources were developed to help research units adopt inclusive practices. These resources included guides on gender-sensitive management, inclusive recruitment processes, and communication strategies.
The project also emphasized the importance of inclusive research practices by providing interdisciplinary training and creating guidelines for integrating gender perspectives into research projects, particularly those funded by European programs. Additionally, it promoted inclusive communication through workshops and the development of a manual for researchers.
By addressing challenges such as career segregation and organizational barriers, the project sought to foster a more equitable and inclusive research environment. Its outcomes include practical tools, training programs, and awareness-raising activities, all aimed at advancing gender equality in academia and research.
This project achieved significant results in reducing gender inequalities in scientific research at the University of Coimbra (UC), contributing to broader economic and social equality. Its outcomes benefited researchers, particularly women, and the academic community in general.
The project successfully encouraged more female researchers at UC to apply for competitive programs such as the European Research Council (ERC) and Marie Curie, as well as to take on leadership roles in consortia and participate in scientific evaluation panels. By raising awareness about gender bias among selection committees and promoting inclusive scientific practices and communication, the project helped create a fairer and more equitable academic environment.
Over its three-year duration, the project engaged UC’s research community, fostering dialogue and driving change to reduce gender disparities in research. Its activities included training, mentorship, and the development of practical tools and guidelines, which empowered researchers to integrate gender perspectives into their work and leadership practices.
The project’s impact extends beyond UC, serving as a model for other Portuguese universities and potentially influencing institutions in other countries. By addressing gender inequalities in research, the project not only benefited individual researchers but also contributed to a more inclusive and equitable academic culture.
Summary of bilateral results
The GendER@UC EEA Grants project strengthened bilateral relations with the University of Iceland through reciprocal visits in 2021, 2022, and 2024, fostering the exchange of experiences and best practices. Inspired by Iceland’s long-standing “Equality Days,” UC organized its first Equality Days UC in 2023, engaging the academic community in gender equality-focused activities such as theater, film, workshops, exhibitions, and concerts. In 2024, the project participated in the III International Congress of CIEG and hosted its Final Conference, showcasing achievements and promoting the continuation of gender equality efforts beyond the project’s end. This ongoing collaboration has deepened ties between the two universities, enriching their mutual understanding and advancing gender equality policies in academia.
