Description
The project aims to make known, in a simple but appropriate and correct way, the great variables and the general framework of the Ocean Assessment carried out by the Joint Working Group on the Regular Process of the United Nations General Assembly, making the knowledge of its conclusions accessible to policy makers and by different audiences that can then be shared openly and widely disseminated in society.By accomplishing that, the project aims at promoting a better science-based definition for Action Plans for economic, social or environmental action that relate to the use and conservation of the Ocean. The project aims to bridge the gap in the production of knowledge in the Ocean Assessment report and its knowledge and ownership by its last recipients, through the creation and compilation of a collection of thematic information sheets following the essential topics of the report, and the making of illustrative and accessible infographic films for policy makers and different audiences that can then be shared openly and widely disseminated in society.
Summary of project results
GLOBOCEAN aims to publicise the main variables and the general framework of the Ocean Assessment carried out by the Joint Working Group on the Regular Process of the United Nations General Assembly in a simple but appropriate and correct way, making knowledge of its conclusions accessible to policy makers and different audiences that can then be shared openly and disseminated widely in society, and thus contributing to the better definition of Action Plans for economic, social or environmental action related to the use and conservation of the Ocean. The project thus aims to bridge the gap between the production of the knowledge contained in the Ocean Assesment report and its knowledge and appropriation by its ultimate recipients, by creating and compiling a collection of thematic information sheets following the essential topics of the report, and by making illustrative infographic films with increased accessibility.
The project was organised into 3 phases: (1) Information processing and preparation of materials; (2) Film production; and (3) Dissemination. The project enabled the production of dissemination materials, consisting of 5 films using infographics and motion graphics techniques and their respective thematic sheets, and their open source availability for wide dissemination of the WOAII results through the films and didactic content produced for the target audience and other audiences, namely teachers and students in higher education, as well as allowing their presentation in different spaces including conferences, workshops and schools/universities.
The products resulting from the project were widely received by the different audiences contacted, proving useful in disseminating the knowledge produced within the framework of the WOAII. The benefits of the project are evident in its endorsement as a project of the UN Decade of Ocean Science, the interest shown by the UNESCO GA and the extent of the online reach of the content produced, which exceeded all the team''s expectations. The project thus fulfils its objectives, and its results will remain available for free use by teachers, associations, activists and others to disseminate the content produced, helping to perpetuate the benefits generated by the project over time.
