Description

The Project will be located in Quinta de Recreio (recreational farm) Marquês de Pombal (QRMP) in the municipality of Oeiras, and is part of the projects to strengthen adaptation to climate change at the local level. The project aims to to promote the good environmental status of ecosystems, adoption of natural-based solutions, based on ecosystem services, with an adequacy of the methodologies and technologies used. It has high replicability potential. It creates knowledge to give greater robustness to local and sectoral policies of adaptation on Climate Changes Collection and systematization of scientific information on Biodiversity at QRMP through scientific inventory activities with our Partners we will get to know better the habitats, species of native flora and fauna and invasive ones. From this knowledge it is possible to measure the ecological potential of QRMP, allowing to restore and/or preserve these ecosystems, and monitor their evolution through indicators, over time.

Summary of project results

The project ‘More Pollinators, More Biodiversity in the Municipality of Oeiras’ contributes to the Environment, Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy Programme, particularly for the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Program Area (PA13) and its Objectives (Outcome 3), and it is stipulated that the ‘Results obtained’ promote the ‘Improvement of resilience and responsiveness to climate change in selected areas’. The expected result is to ‘increase resilience to climate change, through measures concrete adaptation to climate change, at local level, and low-cost technological solutions carbon and climate change mitigation in cities.

The project falls clearly into three lines of action:

1. Increase the public awareness about biodiversity and associated benefits;

2. In creating projects of monitoring of Biodiversity, with the citizens and schools

3. In increasing the knowledge of population for the importance of urban ecosystems and your protection.

Briefly the main strenghts and weaknesses of the project are the following:

- In respect to strenghts we can say that the project increased the citizen participation on issues as biodiversity and pollinization. By other hand, The project allowed the  identification of biodiversity and its richness in terms of the number of species of both flora and fauna was carried out on the farm, exceeding all expectations. It was important to involve the scientific community (partners) in the processes of identification and monitoring of
biodiversity, as well as the monitoring of citizens by scientists in the Bioblitzes, promoting citizen science and bringing citizens closer to science.

Regarding the weaknesses of project it is important to mention the difficulty in integrating the Zambujeiro Forest into the National Network of the
Natura Network, but with the possibility of integrating it in the medium term. Difficulty in maintaining the budgeted amounts due to the financial volatility experienced during the project period. The existence of a pandemic that conditioned part of the project, namely in the actions that involved a greater number of citizens, however there was a positive evolution throughout the project.
