Description

In the Western societies there is an increasing number of people having problems with joint cartilage due to obesity, aging, or playing sports that put a strain on the joints. Damage to joint cartilage causes pain and impedes movement. The World Health Organization has declared osteoarthritis an epidemic of the 21st century. It is estimated that 8-9 million people in Poland already suffer from it.

The articular cartilage is not reached by blood or lymphatic vessels which in other tissues are responsible for supplying nutrients, and that is why therapies using stem cells have started to be applied. Itis a new direction in medicine, which aims to cure by replacing old and sick cells with young cells.

Under the project we will develop and market an innovative service for regeneration of articular cartilage by transplanting stem cells obtained from the patient''s own adipose tissue, with simultaneous reduction of body weight by liposuction (automatic reduction of body weight relieves pressure on joints). This therapy will repair, restore and regenerate tissues damaged as a result of disease, birth defect or injury, but also as a result of the aging process. The main recipients of the project are elderly and ill people who struggle with the problem of articular cartilage degeneration.

The project will be implemented in partnership with a Norwegian entity, SPECIALIZED SURGICAL PRACTICE AS which has developed a number of original medical procedures regarding articular cartilage regeneration services. The partner will support Femmed in developing the process and providing the service, and will also become the owner’s mentor in the field of regenerative medicine.

We have planned the purchase of consulting services related to the implementation of the new treatment method and of specialist equipment enabling the procedures. Also, mentoring and travel to Norway are planned.

Summary of project results

The applicant decided to develop and implication an innovative service for the regeneration of articular cartilage through cells stem transplantation obtained from adipose tissue suspended in autologous fibrin frame using our own method. The treatment is for improvement quality of life, especially of older people, who are most affected by problem of articular cartilage. It is often corelate with overweight and obesity, so combining the method with tissue reduction fat is an important aspect in terms of health and economy.

There is increasing  number of people who have a problem with articular cartilage. It is often associated with obesity, aging or sports which affect the joints. The main purpose of regenerative medicine in general is to repair, restore and regenerate tissues that have been damaged as a result of disease, birth defect or injury, but also the aging process of the body. The use of adipose tissue in the procedure will also contribute to the reduction of overweight and obesity, which affects more than half of Polish society. Overweight and obesity is the third (after hypertension and smoking) risk factor for other diseases. Among the health consequences of overweight and obesity are:

cardiovascular complications (e.g. hypertension, ischemic heart disease, lipid disorders), respiratory (including sleep apnea and asthma), neurological (including stroke and dementia), gastrointestinal and hepatic (including type II diabetes and pre-diabetes), endocrine (including fertility disorders and premature puberty), skeletal (including osteoarthritis, back pain), renal, as well as psychosocial consequences (e.g. low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, reduced academic performance) and numerous cancers.

Accordingly, the project will affect the quality and life expectancy of the recipient.

The project realisation caused development and introduction of an innovative service for the regeneration of articular cartilage by transplanting stem cells obtained from adipose tissue by liposuction (automatic weight reduction improves joint relief and improves quality of life). Benefivciary took advantage of the consultancy service, mentoring, legal, take part to the  business trips to Norway. Innovative service required  purchase of appropriate fixed assets. The benneficiary developed the method and tested it to the research group (100 person). After this proccess introduced the developed method to the enterprise.

The beneficiary has developed an innovative service for the client with high effectiveness, with ensuring the patient''s comfort during the procedure and eliminating the negative consequences of the procedure through the element of recovery.

The project increased the competitiveness of the Femmed Clinic Private Medical Practice

Magdalena Potembska Eberhardt by introducing an innovative cartilage regeneration service to the offer, which will improve the quality of life, especially for the elderly.

The project contributed to the increase of knowledge, skills and competences of the entrepreneur and because of it to the development of business activity, expansion of the range of services.

The applicant implemented a communication plan to increase public awareness of the existence Norwegian funds with a view to reaching as many recipients as possible.

Two information events regarding the project''s progress, achievements and results were held - opening and closing the project, and information about them was published in the press. Current information on the project implementation was posted on the website.

The results of the project include an increase in the position of Klinika Femmed Magdalena Potembska Eberhardt in the industry. By starting the project, the Beneficiary increased its competences, purchased three medical appliances with modern technology for the implementation of new ones services, established new contacts, acquired new customers. Development of an innovative method regeneration of articular cartilage and the promotion of activities in this area have increased recognition brands. The company''s services have expanded to include a new offer - articular cartilage regeneration using stem cells obtained from adipose tissue, including a cell collection procedure stem cells, their administration and post-treatment regeneration of the patient. In connection with the planned Due to the increase in the number of clients, an additional employee was hired - a treatment assistant.

Summary of bilateral results

Bilateral cooperation contributed to strengthening bilateral relations - an innovative method of articular cartilage regeneration using a transplant of stem cells obtained from adipose tissue was developed, partners shared experience and knowledge. The beneficiary had several meetings with the Mentor and received tips on developing the proposed method of regenerating articular cartilage using stem cells. The method of developing the articular cartilage regeneration procedure, the diagnostic procedure, qualifying the patient for the procedure and carrying out the method itself and its stages were discussed, patient''s recovery. The acquired knowledge ensured the correct and complete implementation of the project. Beneficiary achieved the intended result by introducing a new type of service in the clinic.Cooperation with the mentor was an interesting experience, an opportunity to expand knowledge, verify the idea, and refine the cartilage regeneration method.
