OBJECTIVE:
The main goal of the project is to develop transnational integration and cooperation of cultural and scientific communities in Poland and Norway.
OPERATIONAL GOALS:
Specific objectives include:
- incorporate creative traditions of ethnic minorities and regional groups in the cultural and artistic mainstream;
- popularize knowledge about Polish and Norwegian artistic textiles and its cultural conditions;
- formulate new research perspectives on textile arts;
- share experiences, good practices and lessons learned, resulting in the experience of "learning from each other";
- improve competences and prepare curator students for professional work;
- strengthen competences of the personnel of cultural and academic institutions as well as improve competences in the field of international project management in institutions and universities which are project partners.
EVENTS:
The task includes:
- co-organization of international textile art exhibitions;
- organization of seminars with the participation of students and postgraduate students of art schools and experts from Poland and Norway;
- organization of research residencies;
- organization of an international symposium;
- cooperation in the preparation of a scientific publication, development of a web platform and promotional materials for the project.

Summary of project results
The project entitled “Interweaving Structures: Fabric as Material, Method and Message” in cooperation with the Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz (CMWL) with the University of Bergen in Norway (UB) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (AFAK):
Thematic scope of the project is focused on textiles art, which is presented firstly as part of the heritage of visual arts - artistic commentary of the authors on important, current phenomena and issues. Secondly, as a carrier of cultural meanings, an ingredient of rituals and a historical document. The project also takes into account the needs to include the creative traditions of the Saami ethnic minority from northern Norway or the disappearing weaving techniques of local communities in the Podlasie region into the wider stream of culture and art.
The task involved the co-organisation of international exhibitions of textile art, seminars with the participation of students and PhD students of art universities and experts from Poland and Norway, research residencies, an international symposium, as well as cooperation in the creation of a scientific publication, an internet platform and promotional materials for the project. The project has been implemented at the Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz, the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, at the University of Bergen, as well as in Janów in Podlasie and the city of Kautokeino in northern Norway.
The project responds to the need to build intercultural dialogue, to develop cooperation between cultural and scientific communities among others in order to nurture and disseminate cultural heritage in the area of traditional and contemporary fabrics. The main goal of the project is the development of transnational integration and cooperation of cultural and scientific communities from Poland and Norway. The specific objectives include: integrating the creative traditions of ethnic minorities and regional groups into a wider stream of culture and art, popularisation of knowledge about Polish and Norwegian artistic fabric and its cultural conditions, formulation of new research perspectives on textile art, exchange of experiences, exchange of experiences and good practices and conclusions drawn from the to the experience of “learning from each other”, increasing the competences and preparing students of curatorial studies for professional work, as well as strengthening their ability to use innovative ideas to generate benefits in the cultural sector, supporting artistic development by organising artists'' residences, strengthening the competences of cultural sector and science and increasing competences in the management of international projects in institutions and universities that are project partners.
Project events:
- Project launch - Online meetings of the substantive and project management staff of the partners - the Central Textile Museum in Łódź, the Faculty of Fine Arts, Music and Design of the University of Bergen and the Doctoral School of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków
- Implementation of 4 thematic seminars with the participation of international participants, including webinars and multi-day scientific residencies in Łódź (I), Podlasie (II), Oslo (III) and Bergen (IV).
- Creation of 2 films about the project showing the profiles of participants from Poland and Norway and their mentors-supervisors. The films contain statements by the above-mentioned people and reports from the residencies in Łódź and Podlasie organized in the second trimester of 2022.
- Implementation of an international seminar for art curators. This seminar, called "Community of Writers" devoted to writing texts about textile art, was prepared by the representative of the Norwegian partner, Prof. Anne Szefer Karlsen. The seminar was attended by participants from Norway, Sweden, Greenland and Germany, who applied in an open recruitment announced online by prof. Szefer Karlsen. Part I of the seminar included stationary classes in Bergen from 25 to 29 October 2022. The program consisted of workshops by prof. Szefer Karlsen and Lola Olufemi, visits to art galleries and during the Bergen Assembly festival events, and lectures by Lola Olufemi and Liisa Ravna Finbog.
- curatorial seminar in Łódź and Warsaw from 18 to 22 January. The seminar included stationary classes at CMWŁ, visits to galleries and artists'' studios in Łódź and Warsaw. The program of classes at CMWŁ consisted of workshops by prof. Szefer Karlsen, guided tours and workshops led by exhibition curators from CMWŁ. The seminar resulted in the creation of a concept of texts for a design publication devoted to textile art.
- Opening of Exhibition #1 with the participation of invited artists and works from the collection of the Central Textile Museum. The exhibition "Second Skin" was opened on May 19 (closing on September 3, 2023). The exhibition featured 19 artists: 14 Polish and 5 Norwegian. In addition to the works of the aforementioned artists, the exhibition also showed over 20 works from the CMWŁ collection - objects with which the works of young artists entered into a dialogue. During the exhibition opening, Polish and Norwegian artists were present, representatives of all project partners.
- Opening of Exhibition #2 The Work Than Textile Does at the Central Textile Museum with the participation of project partners. The exhibition opened on July 8, 2023 (closing on September 24, 2023). In addition to the large audience, the vernissage was attended by several artists whose works are exhibited at the exhibition, as well as curators Anne Szefer Karlsen, Marta Kowalewska and Jakub Gawkowski. The exhibition included works by 55 Norwegian and Polish artists, as well as artists from Germany and Belgium, among others, including many important older works from the collection of artistic fabrics of the CMWŁ, as well as works borrowed from renowned museums and galleries in Europe. The Education Department prepared an offer of 6 different workshops inspired by the exhibition for organized groups and individual participants. In addition to the curatorial tour, two lectures related to the theme of the exhibition were held as part of the accompanying program (Errol van de Verdt, Okasana Bruikhovetska). - Implementation of a 2-day symposium covering 5 events of a scientific, research, social and artistic nature with the participation of invited experts and artists from Poland and an artist-speaker from abroad - on 23-24.09.2023 - on the occasion of the finissage of Exhibition #2 "Tak prace fali" / "The Work That Textile Does" at the Central Textile Museum.
- Opening of Exhibition #1 "Second Skin: Encounters" at the Lysverket - Kode gallery in Bergen (14.10-26.11.2023),
- Work on a project publication entitled "Entangled. Texts on Textiles" edited by Anne Szefer Karlsen from the University of Bergen.
- Work on the second of the project publications "Textile Textures. Multithreaded Narratives” the curator from CMWŁ created a comprehensive concept, 6 texts by renowned critics: Janis Jefferies, Jessica Hemmings, Errol van de Werdt, Marta Lisok, Marcin Różyc, Marta Kowalewska and 5 interviews, including with Bernarda Rość, an artist creating using the traditional Podlasie double-thread technique, the Saami Norwegian artist Hilde Skancke Pedersen, and the Ukrainian artist Oksana Briukhovetska.
