Description
The buildings covered by the project are old buildings (70s/80s of the 21st century), generating significant heat losses. For economic and environmental reasons, it is necessary to improve their energy efficiency.
Therefore, the main goal of the project is to improve the energy efficiency of two educational buildings in the city of Żory and to raise the environmental awareness of the city''s inhabitants. The activities are consistent with the Europe 2020 Strategy and other EU and national strategic programs. The project activities assume comprehensive thermal modernization of school buildings with the use of renewable energy sources (photovoltaic installations). An educational campaign will be carried out to ensure the environmental awareness of the inhabitants. The project also includes promotional and information activities in line with the prepared Communication Plan. The main goal of the project is to improve the energy efficiency of the two educational buildings in Żory and to raise the environmental awareness of the city''s inhabitants. The students and people employed in schools will benefit from the improved energy efficiency of buildings. Additionally the residents of Żory will be the recipients of the educational campaign
Summary of project results
The biggest challenge was to reduce CO2 emissions, increase the share of energy generated through RES, reduce primary energy consumption and increase public awareness of energy efficiency. The planned investment was to carry out comprehensive works in order to achieve reduction in buildings’ heat loss, leading to reduction in electricity and heat costs. The work was carried out in two school buildings located in the city of Żory, i.e. ‘’Mikołaj Kopernik Technical School No. 1 in Żory” and ‘’Otylia Jędrzejczak Elementary School No. 4 with Sports and Sports Championship Branches in Zory”. Moreover, the project, thanks to the improvement of energy efficiency of buildings in school facilities, working and educational conditions have also been improved.
Within the framework of Task No. 1: Thermomodernization of the Elementary School No. 4 in Żory, construction works were carried out, which included, among others: installation of photovoltaic installation on the roofs of the building, replacement of the heat exchanger with a new one, hydraulic regulation of the central heating system with adjustment to the heat demand after thermomodernization, replacement of thermostatic valves, insulation of: the ceiling, roof over the gymnasium, external walls, gable walls from the side of the sports field, basement walls, and replacement of windows and external doors.
As part of Task No. 2: Thermal modernization of T-1 at the Mikolaj Kopernik Technical School No. 1 in Zory, construction works were carried out, which included: modernization of central heating, replacement of the thermal node with a new single-function thermal node, and replacement of the internal central heating installation in parts A and B with a new one, adapted to current technical requirements, insulation of the roof, external ceilings over the entrances to the school, ceiling, external walls, and installation of RES installations - photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the school building with a power of up to 50 kWp.
Within Task 3: Educational activities to raise environmental awareness, educational activities were carried out such as. Energy efficiency information campaign in ‘Kurier Żorski’, the city''s website and social media, 4 workshops, including field activities with the participation of experts and representatives of target groups, ecological competition ‘Green nook at school’, Energy Saving Day - an educational event for residents with particular emphasis on school pupils, creation of interest groups at schools on ecological issues and examining the impact of ‘energy’ choices on the environment, organisation of an inter-school debate entitled ‘Green nook at school’, and a debate on energy efficiency called ”The district oxford debate tournament ‘Ecologically aware’ on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources” and the purchase of educational aids.
As part of Task 4: Information and promotion, activities were carried out in accordance with the Communication Plan, i.e. information and commemorative plaques were made, 3 information events were organised, including: a press conference to open the project, a concluding seminar, a closing conference with a study walk to summarise the effects of the project, brochures and posters promoting the project were printed, a website with an English subpage was maintained, and information was published in the local press - Kurier Żorski.
The beneficiary would like to highlight the fact that if it were not for the funding from the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 under the programme: ‘Environment, Energy and Climate Change’, programme area: Environment/Energy/Climate, it would not have been possible to realise the investment with the funds of the Municipality of Żory alone. By generating energy from renewable sources, the beneficiary reduced CO2, increased the energy standard of buildings and made additional savings in primary energy resulting from the replacement of lighting with energy-efficient lighting. In addition, it has increased public awareness of energy efficiency among both adults and pupils in Żory educational institutions. By repeating the above-mentioned ‘soft’ activities in the future, the city of Żory is becoming more environmentally friendly and focused on protecting the planet. And participation in the project confirms this.
