Mitigating effects of climate changes through developing a system of green-blue infrastructure in the area of Nowa Ruda city

Project facts

Project promoter:
Commune Nowa Ruda(PL)
Project Number:
PL-CLIMATE-0005
Status:
Completed
Final project cost:
€902,137
Donor Project Partners:
INTBAU Norway(NO)

Description

Project realization stems from the provisions of strategic documents and responds to the diagnosed issues in Nowa Ruda, such as: change in the structure of rainwater, increase in the number of extreme phenomena, air pollution, insufficient amount of green areas, low degree of rainwater management and disposal, occurrence of urban “heat island”, low social awareness of climate changes.

Under the project a number of adaptation – mitigation actions and education – information ones have been planned in green-blue infrastructure. They constitute a reply to the diagnosed issues, such as: - conduct of new plantings, - actions related to rainwater management and disposal, - modernizing street lights for better energy efficiency, - promoting cycling, - actions increasing social awareness of climate changes.

The project will contribute to increasing resistance to climate changes, i.e., through conduct of new plantings, managing rainwater in the area of the Urban Municipality of Nowa Ruda.

Project realization will bring a number of benefits to Nowa Ruda inhabitants and the city visitors who will participate in education-information actions.

Our partner, INTBAU Norway, has experience in implementing partnership projects. Within the framework of the project, the partner will participate in educational and informational activities in the form of training and in information and promotion activities in the form of a scientific conference. The activities of the partner focus, among others, on green infrastructure development. Thanks to the participation of the partner from the Donor States there will be an exchange of experience and solutions related to rainwater management as implemented in the partner country.

Summary of project results

The problems that will be solved thanks to the implementation of the Project include:

- unused potential for the use of rainwater,

- the phenomenon of erosion on numerous slopes in the city,

- low awareness of residents regarding the possibilities of rainwater management,

- occurrence of the so-called effect urban heat island,

- air pollution.

The design challenge was the unused potential of rainwater, air pollution and the so-called urban heat island. The city experiences a higher amount of precipitation than the average for the voivodeship and Poland, which is approximately 800 mm. Moreover, due to the mountainous nature of the city, there are many slopes which are exposed to erosion during rainfall. The problems faced by Nowa Ruda also result from insufficient awareness of residents regarding the possibilities of rainwater management.

The project contributed to the implementation of climate change mitigation and adaptation activities

effects at the city level of Nowa Ruda through:

- Number of completed investments in the field of green and blue infrastructure: 31.

- Number of trained experts: 5 people.

- Number of people covered by awareness-raising campaigns 107,740.00 people.

- Area of created/revitalized green areas 17.0355 ha

- Area of uncapped land 1.7303 ha

Increased ability of Nowa Ruda residents to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change:

- Number of residents who benefit from adaptation and mitigation activities - 20,421 people

- Number of supported urban action plans for adaptation and mitigation of climate change – 1 piece

The main target group are the inhabitants of Nowa Ruda, who will benefit from the effects of the project and educational and information activities. Visitors will also benefit from the project''s effects.

As part of the project, all educational and information events planned in the Communication Plan were implemented, such as:

1. Educational video.

2. Social media campaign.

3. Newspaper articles.

4. Information brochure.

5. Eco-city game titled Blue and green mountain adventure.

6. Educational ecological picnic "Let''s be Eco" organized on the premises of schools covered by the project.

7. Photo competition for residents entitled: My home rain garden.

8. Competition for children entitled Our rainwater.

9. Workshops for residents entitled: Catch the rain.

10. Workshops for children from schools covered by the project entitled Let''s take care of our greenery.

The project carried out three main information events regarding project progress, achievements and results:

- First press conference (inaugurating the project);

- Conference II – scientific based on lectures, discussion panels and workshops;

- Conference III – press conference (summarizing the project).

During the implementation of the project, the Beneficiary placed information boards at the site of the project (8 locations). These plaques have been replaced with commemorative plaques.

Placing information about conferences in the local press (3 pieces) along with articles about the project.

Summary of bilateral results

Thanks to the participation of the partner from the Donor States, an exchange of experiences took place, and solutions related to stormwater management in the partner''s country, which could be implemented by the Applicant, were presented. The partnership contributed to achieving the project implementation goals. The main results from a bilateral level:-Study visits (two) of the Partner to the Applicant aimed at consulting the implementation of the educational and informational activity: training and knowledge transfer in the form of specialized education planned within the project, as well as evaluating the completed educational and investment activities (Partner''s participation, flight, accommodation, and meals).-Participation of the Partner in the second conference (Partner''s attendance).Plans to continue the bilateral cooperation - At the moment, there are no concrete plans.
