Summary of project results
The needs analysis showed that local communities and their leaders in the areas near the border with Ukraine in the province Lublin province needs support: - development of leadership and communication skills of local leaders so that they can conduct dialogue with residents and partners and engage them in joint action; - increasing the ability of local communities to raise funds to implement their ideas, including using participatory mechanisms (e.g. village fund, local initiative) and fundraising tools (e.g. crowdfunding, sponsoring); - implementation of an integrated, innovative action model based on dialogue with residents and their involvement (sequence: debate - idea for a thematic village, creating a quest, designing places, local initiative).
As part of the project, local leaders were comprehensively trained, and a study visit to Norway was held, presenting the local experience in the development of sustainable tourism, counteracting climate change, permaculture, etc. In total, the project included 8 quests and 8 participatory site development projects, 18 meetings with residents (debates on town development, consultation workshops on creating local policies), 8 picnics with young people, and 8 mini-initiatives of residents. Projects of local policies have been developed in 4 local governments: senior policies in the commune. Wola Uhruska and Podedwórze, youth policy in the commune. Urszulin and policy regarding the directions of tourism development for the Włodawa poviat. The project results were disseminated through an information campaign and a conference summarizing the project. A total of 385 people took part in the project, including young people. Additionally, approximately 300 people (mainly young people) participated in the quest picnics.
All results planned under the project were achieved, i.e.
- 16 local leaders who took part in the training series improved their competences in leadership, communication, engagement, challenges of multicultural communities, project management, fundraising, tourism development tools and public policies
- 8 site development projects were developed in the form of board designs with technical drawings and a detailed description of the concept of developing each site; in some towns (e.g. Włodawa, Dubeczno, Hańsk) elements of the projects have already been implemented as part of local initiatives;
- 8 mini-initiatives of residents were implemented in 8 towns participating in the project (Uhrusk, Wola Uhruska, Sawin, Dubeczno, Hańsk, Włodawa, Wereszczyn, Hołowno) - in accordance with the above. description of project activities; These initiatives were an impulse for joint activities for the inhabitants of the above-mentioned areas. towns and proof that together we can change a lot in our surroundings;
- 8 quests were created (maintenance-free, educational field games available in leaflets, in the mobile application "Quests - Expeditions of Explorers" and on the website www.questy.org.pl) in the above-mentioned 8 towns; quests constitute an interesting tourist and educational offer in these areas, they do not require special service, and they attract recipients from outside (also due to the fact that there are 8 of them in a small area, so questers from other regions of Poland are already planning their holidays / vacations in Polesie);
- 4 local policy documents were developed with the participation of residents (Senior Policy for the Podedwórze commune, Senior Policy for the Wola Uhruska commune, Youth Policy for the Urszulin commune, Policy on directions of tourism development for Włodawa County), which were forwarded for further consultations and adopted by the relevant bodies (municipal councils and county councils).
Summary of bilateral results
The cooperation with the Norwegian partner (Håskog) went very well. The following activities were carried out as part of it: 1. A full-day online workshop for local leaders from the project area on sustainable tourism and permaculture on 1 April 2023 (described in activity 2). 2. A study visit to Norway for local leaders on 20-23 April 2023 (described in activity 3). 3. Other activities carried out as part of the project were consulted with the Norwegian partner, in particular ideas for local initiatives and the mode of consulting local policies. We did not encounter any problems in cooperation with the Norwegian partner. All activities were carried out without any obstacles. The exchange was so fruitful that we decided to cooperate after the project (we managed to obtain funds for the implementation of another joint project under the beForMe program).
