Description

This is an intervention project, elaborated in response to an investment planned by the local authorities: the renovation of a local road – a beautiful Warmian alley. We received information about the investment in autumn 2021. We are concerned that the renovation will not meet the needs of our community, and that the trees in our avenue will need to be cut down to make it happen. We want to enable the community to have their say on this important issue. Trees and safety do not have to be in conflict and the views of residents should be taken into account. As part of the project we will create a local coalition for the alley, conduct training and consultancy. In cooperation with volunteers we will make an inventory of the tree stand in a selected section. Certified inspectors will assess the condition of the trees and their natural value. Based on the data obtained, with the support of an independent designer and in cooperation with village councils and members of our community, we will design a preliminary concept for a safe road. The project will help to integrate the community and plan the renovation of the road, taking into account the needs of the residents. The tools developed will make it easier to manage the tree stand in the future. We believe that the authorities will hear and take into account our voice, and that the trees will not be cut down. We are on the right track!

Summary of project results

The project was an intervention in the Warmian Avenue of Trees. In autumn 2021, we received information that local authorities were planning a road investment. We are afraid that the planned renovation will result in logging - just like in other avenues in the area. We want to raise our voice on this matter and enable other community members to do so. Trees and safety do not have to be in conflict, and the opinions of residents should be taken into account.

The project established a local coalition to create a social concept for the development of the avenue on the N1203 district road on the Jonkowo-Gamerki Wielkie section. The aim of the coalition''s work was to build dialogue and bring together conflicting groups of residents in a joint discussion, so that the local community could develop a common concept for the development and renovation of the road. In parallel with activities involving residents, the project cooperated with experts who helped develop the concept and provided appropriate data for this purpose.
Especially in design
• An inventory and in-depth diagnostics of trees in the alley were carried out (500 trees)
• A number of local meetings were organized regarding the project topic - collecting residents'' needs, developing and discussing solutions
• Meetings and training were held to strengthen the coalition''s work.
• Volunteers were involved.

-during the project, we managed to build a space for dialogue focused on the needs and searching for common solutions in our polarized community
- residents'' knowledge about procedures and the possibility of expressing opinions on planned investments was increased
-residents were given the opportunity to express their needs, opinions and positions - written down in a document describing the concept of the avenue''s development
-the group of active residents was strengthened through coalition workshops
