Description

The project addresses the need to change the way people with disabilities are portrayed in the media in the Wielkopolska Region. This topic arouses little interest in the local media environment of the region. Moreover, there is a large discrepancy between recommendations in this area and the reality. On the one hand, various reports and strategic documents contain commitments to promote a positive image of people with disabilities. On the other hand, too few people with disabilities work in the media and the quality of materials portraying this group is too low. The need for action in this respect has already been mentioned by many social communication researchers, as well as by authors of such documents as the Regulatory Strategy of the National Broadcasting Council or the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Joint action to improve the image of people with disabilities will result in greater integration of these people in the local community. The main objective of the project is to prevent the exclusion of people with disabilities in the media of the Wielkopolska Region. We will set up the Wielkopolska Media Network of Persons with Disabilities, within which local media creators will work out solutions to diagnosed problems. We will conduct workshops for secondary school students which will be run by journalists with disabilities. A publication will be produced describing the principles for promoting a positive image of people with disabilities in the local media.

Summary of project results

A project regarding the problem of implementing in practice the principles of presenting a positive image of People with Disabilities (OzN) in local media and OzN''s participation in these media in Wielkopolskie voivodeship. We want to address the topic due to the low level of interest, knowledge and cooperation of the OzN media community, which is important in building the group''s image. The activities will reach to potentially excluded (creators and recipients of incomplete media) and exclusionary (local media not directly related to the topic of OzN). The need for action in this field has been justified many times by researchers. It also results from the documents and reports used. Our actions are also motivated by the observation of the work of the prion.pl editorial office since 2004, which is run and staffed exclusively by OzN.

1. running the PION.PL portal. The activity was continuous due to the way the editorial office worked. The portal published new content every day throughout the duration of the project (on editorial office days, business days). A total of 1,459 materials were published over 294 business days during the activity, which gives an average of approximately 5 materials per day. 2. Organization, implementation and summary of journalism workshops with school children in Wielkopolski. As part of the activity From April to June this year. 9 workshops were carried out, each for approximately 25 people, a total of 89 students of the 1st and 2nd grades of high school (non-repeated people) took part in the workshops. Topics of the meetings: perception of disability, how to write about it, practical workshops, a total of 227 repeating people, 89 non-repeating people. 3. Organization, implementation and summary of networking meetings and development and implementation of rules for influencing the image of OzN in local media. An organizational meeting of the networking group was organized (March this year, 4 people - editors and a journalist -OzN), where the needs of journalists and bloggers were analyzed and the topics of subsequent meetings were tentatively determined. There were also 2 meetings with bloggers describing the environment of people with disabilities about disabilities in the media (May this year, 6 people) and the image of people with disabilities in the media (June this year, 3 people). After each meeting, vertical reports were created. pl on FB and in the newsletter, and the conclusions collected from the panels were the basis for the final publication specifying tips for local media in promoting a positive image of people with disabilities. The meetings were moderated by the pion.pl editorial team.

Results of planned activities: 1 series of workshops for 89 students, potential future media employees, will take part in journalistic workshops - shaping their views on OzN 15 representatives of local media not specializing in disability issues took part in networking meetings - getting acquainted with and implementing the principles of influencing the positive image of OzN 15 half-parent media creators (including people from more than 4 NGOs in the region) took part in networking meetings - strengthening the environment, developing cooperation and reach. Readers of the portal have read the content about the project, which draws attention to the participation of wasps. with incomplete in the media and their image. More than 5 organizations (local media) were involved in networking activities 4 part-time employees continued the work and mission of the editorial office during the project As a result of the project, we observed a change in the attitude of the young people we met towards people with disabilities - we know from the school counselor that students are eager to talk about the topics discussed during workshops, during homeroom hours, with their parents and peers. Meetings with bloggers were also of great value - they showed us how OZN can be perceived in the media in a different way than the editorial office has done so far, we try to implement these solutions in our daily work. Thanks to the implementation of the project, the number of visits to the website pion.pl and on FB PION increased, and the editorial articles are read by an increasing number of people.
