Description

In the Wielkopolska region, the Śrem District, there live representatives of more than 17 nationalities. Migrants do not participate in the social and cultural life of the region. They are concentrated on their work, and often share their homes, or rent flats with other people. As a result, they have fewer opportunities to reveal their social or cultural potentials and show off their professional skills. Migrant children starting school do not speak the language and are not integrated into their peer groups. Within the project we will set up a pilot Social Integration Centre aimed at integrating migrants into the local community of the region. We will run meetings with Ukrainian, Chinese and Belarusian culture, and conduct language and art workshops. In primary schools, we will host interdisciplinary educational workshops and an art competition under the slogan ‘Let''s get to know each other’. We will conduct in-depth ethnographic interviews with people representing minority groups in order to learn about their problems, reasons for migration and life plans. At the end of the project, we will organise a conference with a lecture on intercultural education. An exhibition of artistic works will be held, and a map of migrants'' living in the Śrem Municipality presented. We will make all scenarios available to local institutions. Moreover, as part of an ‘eco-happening’ event, we will plant trees acting as symbols of the 17 nationalities living in Śrem. The project has received honorary patronage from the Institute of Anthropology and Ethnology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the Mayor of Śrem. The project partners are: Heliodor Święcicki Public Library in Śrem (where the integration meetings will take place), TV Relax Śrem (a local TV station that will provide media support), St. Brother Albert''s Help for the Needy ‘Hope’ Association, the Polish Nobel Prize Winners Primary School No. 5 in Śrem and the BSCG company.
