Description
The Malta Maritime Museum Project, with an allocation of over €2M under the Norway Grants and €1.5M national funds, is located in the historical city of Birgu earmarked as the cornerstone of cultural heritage in Malta. The story at the Malta Maritime Museum is driven by a backbone of eclectic museum objects, all with an indelible link to the history of Malta, each giving an account of how faiths, cultures, and nations clashed or indeed co-existed on a rock, a surrounding sea, and an ever-smaller world.
Funds were allocated towards civil works and the rehabilitation of the Malta Maritime Museum premises, including a significant expansion of the museum display area for visitors, structural upgrades and the creation of new space for the reserve collection. The visitor experience within the museum was improved through innovative designs, including reimagining the ground floor of the museum and opening other spaces, such as the roof, to be accessible and engaging. More than 2600 artefacts including aretefacts from the Malta Drydocks and the existing collection at the Malta Maritime Museum, were digitised for people to enjoy virtually. Project activities included several interesting activities mainly the set up of a new digitisation unit and an exhibition on digitisation at the Malta Maritime Museum that shows innovative museum collections which were also donated by locals in the area. These artefacts tell a story on their own as they mark several years of history in Malta.
As part of the celebration of this renovated cultural site, Heritage Malta set up a digitisation exhibition for all the general public to experience and explore. This exhibiiton can be visited throughout 2024.
