Description

Latvian people with disabilities are not aware of their rights and hesitate when it comes to standing up for them. People and organizations that represent them lack the knowledge and skills to act in cases of human rights abuses. The attitude of society serves as a hindering factor as well.

Therefore, the project will monitor public attitudes towards the rights of people with disabilities. In addition, people will be trained to recognize violations of their rights and to seek the help they need in such cases. Representatives of disabled people''s organizations will be trained to provide additional support to these people.

The project will be implemented throughout the territory of Latvia. Therefore, project related information will be available to a wide audience on national, regional, and local levels. Moreover, we will create a website to inform the public about the rights of people with disabilities.

Summary of project results

People with disabilities do not recognize and often fail to identify human rights violations and disability-based discrimination. Even when human rights violations are clearly visible, people with disabilities do not know where to turn and how to address the issue.

The challenge is that people with disabilities lack knowledge about human rights and how to protect themselves in cases of human rights violations.

*Training workshops for people with disabilities were held;
*Training workshop was held for 15 organizations on human rights violations and the ways in which protection mechanisms work in Latvia in cases of violations, thus giving these people the skills to understand the situation and advise on the best way to protect their rights;
*Monitoring of electronic mass media (portals, websites, etc.) on public attitudes towards disability was carried out. The monitoring showed a data-based picture of the situation of people with disabilities in different areas of life.
