Description
The need for new initiative was determined by insufficient attention in Lithuanian education and health care systems for children with specific learning disabilities, especially specific reading and letter comprehension disorders. There is a lack of reliable methodology and knowledge in Lithuania to educate children and parents with these disorders.
The main aim of the project is to strengthen children''s mental health by adapting and implementing new quality systems for children with specific learning disabilities in Lithuanian schools.
Project partners will cooperate to develop the most effective quality system of methods and services for vulnerable children with specific learning disabilities by adapting successful practices of foreign countries. Adaptation of a new methodology will provide an opportunity to identify and determine the level of risk of having a specific reading disorder (or developmental dyslexia) in schools. New mechanism will be used to train primary school students with reading and writing disorders, special abilities, and positive self-esteem (psychological well-being).
The implementation of the project activities will contribute both to the strengthening of mental health and to the improvement of the emotional climate of the school and local communities. It will also boost public awareness of the importance of health and the reduction of its inequalities is expected to increase.
Summary of project results
The main aim of the project was to strengthen children''s mental health by adapting and implementing new quality systems for children with specific learning disabilities in Lithuanian schools.
Effective quality system of methods and services for vulnerable children with specific learning disabilities was developed by adapting successful practices of foreign countries. Two initiatives were implemented: 1) a new mechanism based on US research was implemented and adapted. During the implementation period, the mechanism was introduced and applied to schoolchildren in Vilnius, Rokiškis, Panevėžys and Elektrėnai municipalities. New mechanism was used to train primary school students with reading and writing disorders, special abilities, and positive self-esteem (psychological well-being); 2) new methodology used in a foreign country was adapted and implemented. Adaptation of a new methodology provided an opportunity to identify and determine the level of risk of having a specific reading disorder (or developmental dyslexia) in schools.
The implementation of the project activities contributed both to the strengthening of mental health and to the improvement of the emotional climate of the school and local communities. It helped increase public awareness of the importance of health and the reduction of its inequalities.
