Description

Holcim Hrvatska is a large cement company with more than 90 years of tradition in operating stone quarries and cement industry. They are part of the LafargeHolcim Group, a global leader in building materials and solutions. Following their pledge to net zero, Group ambition is to lead the industry in reducing carbon emissions and shifting towards low-carbon construction.

The reason for the investment is determined by the long-term plan to produce high strength cement types with lower clinker factor and therefore more environmentally friendly products. With investment in new production hall and new transportation system they will have increase capacity of production of more environmentally friendly cement types. In addition, they will have +30% decrease of CO2 and reduction of fugitive air dust both in the production area and regionally.

Summary of project results

The main problem of today''s production line for the Promoter (Holcim Croatia) is the outdoor storage of raw material for cement production,  exposed to unfavorable weather conditions which limit implementation of new cement recipes, and a  transport system than can not accommodate increased production capacity. The transport system is a big  ‘’bottleneck’’ in production. There is a need for new production hall and new transport system.

Construction activities led to 2 new processes in the production cycle: Covered mineral components storage area and new mineral components Transportation system. They are constructed and currently in a trial run. 2 new types of cement are implemented. These cement types are CEM III A and CEM III B. There is 1000 t of CEM III B produced so far in a trial period and the production of CEM III A will start soon.

New and improved processes and new cement types in the production are expected to lead to increased turnover and net profit for the company in 2024 compared to 2019 (increase in turnover: 16% and increase in net operating profit: 62%). Covered mineral components Storage area and new mineral components Transportation system will also provide better working conditions for the workers.

Estimated annual decrease of CO2 emissions: -3264 t (Replacement of 16.000 tonnes production of cement types with higher Clinker Factor)
Estimated annual decrease of energy consumption: 0.2 MWh
Estimated annual decrease in dust emissions: -4200 tonnes (Slag fugitive dust emissions prevented by closed
mineral components storage).
