Description

"EQUALGEN" is project that targets a multiplicity of groups nationwide, through integrated activities of training, empowerment, awareness raising and art. The project focuses on young people (16-30 years old), as adolescence and the first years of adulthood signify a period of formative experiences in terms of beliefs formed and ways gender is experienced and expressed. Partners (Anasa & Emantes) will address issues of inequality, sexist attitudes and behaviors, and gender-based violence through methodologies adapted to the different target groups. Young people from various cultural backgrounds and with different gender identities and sexual orientations will participate in empowerment, care and mutual aid activities, where they will negotiate gender related issues in safe spaces. In addition to traditional, dialectical, participatory methods, contemporary art will be used to approach the issue of gender equality experientially and extralinguistically. Furthermore, educators of all levels will be trained, in order to receive the necessary resources to make creative use of their privileged relationship with young people in shaping gender representations and attitudes. Decision makers will be reached through targeted advocacy actions (policy briefs), while the wider public will be sensitized through a digital campaign and an art exhibition. Project Promoter (Diotima) will undertake the general coordination of the project as well as the advocacy activities, the training of public officials, and the communication campaign. It will also be the main partner in the implementation of information and awareness raising activities. All project partners will implement empowerment and awareness raising on issues of gender equality and gender-based violence.

Summary of project results

The Equal_Gen project focused on addressing significant gender inequalities observed in both private and public spheres. These challenges include a lack of gender equality and persistent gender-based violence, particularly affecting young people, women, and LGBTQI+ individuals. There was a need to promote more equitable gender representations and foster inclusive social change, as well as to engage educators and the general public in discussions on gender issues.

The project implemented 13 key actions that included training, awareness-raising, and empowerment initiatives. It conducted 57 activities involving 967 young participants (aged 16-30), focused on gender equality and preventing gender-based violence. A comprehensive digital campaign reached 1,625,175 individuals, and a podcast campaign connected with 1,291,637 listeners. Additionally, 64 young individuals were trained in gender equality in music production, and 440 educators from both formal and non-formal sectors were trained to enhance their influence on students. The project also established 15 collaborations with NGOs and media to promote gender rights and published two thematic policy briefs through its advocacy campaign.

The project achieved widespread awareness and educational impact. It reached over 1.6 million people through its digital and podcast campaigns, effectively promoting gender equality and sensitizing the public on gender-based violence. The project directly empowered 967 young people, primarily women and girls, and LGBTQI+ refugees by providing them with skills for collective empowerment and advocacy. Educators benefited from the training sessions, improving their capacity to influence students on gender issues positively. Furthermore, the project established 15 collaborations with NGOs and media, contributing to a sustainable dialogue on gender rights, and developed policy briefs that advocate for continued progress in gender equality.
