Description

The OBSERVATORY FOR ART IN PRISON "ALL2GATHER" meets the need of creating and operating a network/archive of artistic and humanitarian activities and initiatives that take place within and outside prisons, within the SCS or other support structure, in the form of non-formal education or voluntary programs, but also in the reintegration process. To date, the competent Ministries or other bodies do not maintain a corresponding file that records, archives, studies, evaluates, utilizes projects and actions, nor has a corresponding network of connection and empowerment of the participating bodies been established. An electronic platform will be set up in which actions will be collected, posted and updated with the aim of communication, synergy and interaction of institutions as well as informing and raising public awareness and changing the stereotypical image towards the vulnerable group of prisoners and detainees. All actions will be mapped, recorded and submitted, and there will be communication and interaction within the targets groups. In particular, the existing synergies of the organization and partner with the teams EXIT Association, GIORGOS ZOUGANELIS NETWORK, FREEDOM GATE, DETAINED AND RELEASED WOMEN SUPPORT NETWORK, the detention centers of the Donors Iceland and Norway, Greek University Institutions, the European Prison Education Association (EPEA) and the Institutions EPANODOS and KEME, will be sealed. Organization and partner consist of executives capable of completing integrated projects and experienced in in-prison training, reintegration procedures, with rich voluntary social work and the ability, experience and knowledge to properly communicate the initiative to achieve the connection of all groups.

Summary of project results

The "Observatory for Art in Prison - ALL2GATHER" sought to address the following challenges:

  • Lack of a Centralized Archive and Network: There was no organized system for cataloging and sharing artistic and humanitarian activities within or outside prisons, including those in support structures and reintegration programs.
  • Limited Collaboration and Coordination: Efforts in art-based initiatives and reintegration were fragmented across regions and lacked a formal network for collaboration and exchange of best practices.
  • Underutilization of Art as a Rehabilitative Tool: The potential of art as a means for education, rehabilitation, and reintegration was not fully leveraged due to insufficient support, awareness, and resources.
  • Barriers to Participation: Both logistical and informational barriers hindered the involvement of organizations, volunteers, and educators, particularly those in remote or underserved areas.
  • Insufficient Awareness and Visibility: There was a need to raise awareness among stakeholders and the general public about the importance of art and creative activities in supporting inmates and their reintegration into society.
  • Created a comprehensive archive and digital platform that serves as a repository for materials, initiatives, and best practices, making these accessible to a wide audience
  • Established an informal network of organizations and individuals actively working in prison-related art and education, with plans for further formalization.
  • Increased public and institutional awareness of the role of art in prisons, helping to elevate its importance in education, rehabilitation, and reintegration efforts.
  • Engaged participants from areas far from urban centers, broadening the reach and impact of the initiative.
  • Published a book to support prison instructors, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively with incarcerated students and meet their unique needs.
  • The project’s events, media presence, and online platform ensure long-term public engagement and provide a foundation for sustainable growth of the network.

The project produced significant outcomes that impacted civil society, incarcerated individuals, and organizations involved in art and education:

  • Creation of a Centralized Resource Hub: The All2Gather platform now serves as a central repository for materials, best practices, and ongoing communication about art and reintegration.
  • Strengthened Network and Partnerships: Developed an informal network that brings together legal entities, individuals, and organizations, fostering collaboration and coordination. Formalized mutual understanding agreements, which lay the groundwork for sustained partnerships.
  • Increased Awareness and Engagement: Raised awareness through media campaigns, social media, and events, engaging diverse stakeholders across Greece, including those from remote regions.
  • Expanded Regional Participation: Successfully involved areas outside major urban centers, creating a more geographically inclusive network.
  • Enhanced Capacity Building for Prison Education: Produced a book for instructor training, addressing the specific communication challenges in prison education, thus contributing to the professional development of educators and better outcomes for incarcerated students.
  • Civil Society Empowerment: Empowered individuals and groups to participate actively in the network, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions recognized.
  • Sustainability and Future Actions: Laid the foundation for a potential formal network, with the platform and agreements supporting its long-term viability. Facilitated further initiatives, including partnerships and publications, ensuring ongoing momentum in the field.
