Description

The project will design and implement educational programs for children and teenagers refugees or immigrants at the Children’s Museum of Athens. Specifically 50 groups of 15 persons each will participate in a series of 4 educational programs (one a month) that will take part at the Children’s Museum of Athens.  The educational project aims at the enforcement of the Greek language to children and teenagers refugees or immigrants through educational activities in order to respond to the needs of daily communication, to the school demands and at the same time to the understanding of the Greek reality. Also, the project aims to contribute to the elimination of the cultural gap that the certain group of children and teenagers experiences. The exhibits and the collections of the Children’s Museum of Athens consist the appropriate environment for the implementation of the aforementioned activities as they are interactive and enhance active participation. Participants in these programs are children and teenagers refugees or immigrants who live in Athens and either they go to school (multicultural or not) either they stay at organized centers for refugees.

Summary of project results

Hellenic Children’s Museum with the support of the program Active citizens fund designed and implemented the project “Learning Greek …at the museum” for groups of children and teenagers refugees or immigrants aged 5-15 years old who live in Athens and either they go to school (multicultural or not) either they stay at organized centers for refugees. The educational project aimed at the enforcement of the Greek language to children and teenagers refugees or immigrants through educational activities in order to respond to the needs of daily communication, to the school demands and at the same time to the understanding of the Greek reality.

The project invloved the implementation of 12 pilot educational programs in 3 target groups (4 programs per group), in which 40 children took part. During the implementation of the pilot programs formative assessment took place, which is an integral part of learning and not an independent process. During the formative evaluation, the entire range of learning outcomes in the cognitive, emotional, psychomotor and metacognitive areas was examined and we made the necessary improvements and changes, in order for the project to respond in the best way to the needs and capabilities of the children.

Before the start of the implementation of the programs, an online information meeting was held for teachers from intercultural and standard schools, as well as responsible structures for hosting and caring for refugees in order to gain knowledge about the program and to declare participation in it. Also, media representatives were invited in order to inform and communicate the program to the general public.

Totally, 20 programs were implemented 12 of which were pilot. In the programs participated 50 groups of up to 15 persons each. Totally, in the programs took part 750 children, 415 boys and 335 girls from 10 schools and 7 hosting structures from 43 countries.

The project also supported with their work 6 employees and 28 volunteers that offered 1629 hours during all the stages (study, design, implementation, evaluation).
