Summary of project results

Project objective was to increase the capacity of education and youth institutions to provide trauma-informed support to children and adolescents. In order to do that the Education and Youth Board nationwide Rajaleidja network crisis team was set to be empowered with trainings (including EMDR for children).

The project created a cross-sectorial cooperation model in order to solve crisis situations in education institutions. A training programme to increase trauma-awareness was elaborated and Education and Youth Board’s Rajaleidja crisis team trained to support the regional teams of support specialists at educational institutions; as well as Rajaleidja experts (16) trained on Teaching Recovery Teqniques (TRT) and on trauma awareness traing (10-day training session + supervisions). 10 psychologists from Rajaleidja and schools took part and passed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy trainings for a) adults and b) children.

A cross-sectorial cooperation model in order to solve crisis situations in education institutions enables swift interventions to tacke crisis situations in schools as it lays down the roles and responsibilities of different parties ( school board and the owners of schools, Social Insurance Board, Rescue Board, Police and Border Guard Board, Rajaleidja-team as well as other external players) in regard to offering psychological and psycho-social support. The model contains guidelines and practical examples for action.  The model was introduced at 11 regional seminars to the representatives of educational institutions and local government institutions. Altogether 663 people participated.

Rajaleidja network in 7 regions (Harju, Tartu, Pärnu and Viljandi, East-Viru, Central-Estonia, South-East Estonia, West-Estonia) support the educational institutions in drawing up their personal crisis plans as well as offering their expertise in the crisis situations at hand.  Rajaleidja also leads the cross-rectoral working group that continues to convene and discuss the crisis management issues in educational institutions. The psychologists with EMDR training, practice their skills in their everyday work. As a next step, guidelines for educational institutions concerning suicide cases, are to be developed.
