Description

The aim of the project is the implementation of a specific adaptation measure, namely the restoration of the street tree line in Jahnova Street and the part of náměstí Republiky in order to create sufficient spatial underground conditions for successful tree growth and rainwater infiltration. The project also supposes the financing of a preventive measure in the form of the making the Territorial Study of Urban Green for the City of Pardubice

Summary of project results

The original trees in the tree plantation in Jahnova Street and on náměstí Republiky in Pardubice were already too old and their crowns were breaking. Some of the trees were infected by wood-decaying fungi. The planting of the tree plantations was technologically inappropriate. The trees were growing in concrete blocks and there was insufficient space for root growth in this enclosed space. The roots of the trees were not allowed to grow further. The trees had only nutrients available from the soil in the concrete blocks and gradually began to die after the nutrients were depleted. The soil was compacted and had a poor water and air regime. For this reason, it was not advisable to plant new trees. Employees from the Environment Department, in collaboration with the Chief Architect''s Department and the designer, proposed a system of rootless covers to improve the habitat conditions. This system is particularly suitable for urban environments where the soil is compacted. The new technology provides sufficient volume for tree root growth in an urban environment. The system is equipped with an aeration and irrigation system, which gives the trees more water and oxygen for their healthy growth.The main objective of the project was to improve the conditions of the newly planted trees, to ensure improved microclimatic conditions and rainwater management in the area.

We planted 26 Acacia Robinia pseudoacacia Umbraculifera trees with a trunk size of 16/18 in Jahnova Street and náměstí Republiky. During the planting we increased the volume for roots by creating a system of rootable cells. We used the innovative TreeParker technology. With this technology we ensured a large enough planting space and sufficient nutrients for tree growth. At the same time, we placed communication cables and pipes in the rooting cells, thus ensuring protection against damage from tree roots. As part of the works, we also dismantled the granite pedestrian paving and restored it to its original condition. The surface of the asphalt cycle path was resurfaced throughout its length and width. By preserving the granite mosaic paving, we contributed to water retention in the subgrade and ensured permeability of the paved areas. By planting new tree planting in rooting cells, we created ideal conditions for the successful growth of trees and the existence of organisms in the urban environment. This will prevent overheating of the streets in the future and mitigate thermal fluctuations. We will increase humidity and reduce dust and noise in the historic part of the city.

By planting new tree planting, we have improved the microclimatic conditions in the city centre, created conditions to mitigate thermal extremes, improve hygiene conditions (dust particle capture, carbon dioxide absorption, noise reduction) and rainwater retention. We have also improved the conditions for the city''s inhabitants, as trees have a positive effect on people''s psychological and mental well-being and fulfil an aesthetic function. By planting new trees using new modern technology, we have improved the habitat conditions of the trees, thereby improving local microclimatic and ecological conditions, including rainwater management.
