Description
The aim of the project is the elaboration of the strategic document Adaptation Strategy of LČR s.p. to climate change by 2030. The adaptation strategy will define strategic goals in the field of forestry and water management so that the forest cover of our country is maintained in the future and the resilience of forest stands to the effects of climate change is increased.
Summary of project results
The forest represents a huge potential for mitigating the impacts of climate change, while at the same time being significantly affected by climate change itself. The State Enterprise LČR manages 1.2 million ha of forest, which represents almost half of all forest area in the Czech Republic. The territorial scope of the State Enterprise''s activities is crucial. In accordance with the mission of the enterprise, which was established to ''fulfil important strategic, economic, social, security or other interests of the state'' under the State Enterprise Act, the issue of climate change and its impact on forests is one of the key ones. The aim of the project was to develop an adaptation strategy of the enterprise to the changing conditions in its main areas. The resulting document - the Adaptation Strategy of the State Enterprise Forests of the Czech Republic to Climate Change by 2030 - sets out a long-term strategic approach and identifies measures that should be implemented in relation to climate change. It identifies priorities and procedures that will be implemented in the long term in the area of forestry, water resources, nature and landscape protection in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
As part of the project, we created the document Adaptation Strategy of the State Enterprise Forests of the Czech Republic to Climate Change by 2030. The document defines objectives in the main areas of the company''s activities with regard to ongoing climate change and its consequences in forestry, water management and nature and landscape protection. On the basis of the analysis, measures were proposed in 5 areas including cultivation of species-diverse forest stands, diversification of management, adjustment of game stocks, protection of the forest environment and biodiversity, protection and restoration of the water regime. The strategy results in an Action Plan proposing specific activities and projects, including their financial requirements and urgency. The implementation of the proposed activities will significantly contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change. The document also has practical implications for internal methodological procedures with the aim of translating theory into practice.
The elaboration of the Adaptation Strategy of the State Enterprise Forests of the Czech Republic has provided a current, comprehensive and complex view of the impact of changing climatic conditions on the need to implement measures in sustainable management, protection and care of the forests of the Czech Republic so that they can play their irreplaceable role in coping with the impacts of climate change throughout the Czech Republic in the next decade. Thanks to the structure of the document, it will be possible to update, evaluate and supplement it on the basis of new scientific knowledge, so that it will continue to be possible to transfer new knowledge into practice with the aim of increasing resilience to the effects of climate change and its consequences in the field of forestry and management, nature and landscape protection, water retention in the landscape, preserving or improving the biodiversity of the territory and the societal functions of forests - soil protection, recreation, health, cultural and educational.
