Description
The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the city of Vysoké Mýto, which will take into account all the risk factors of climate change for this municipality. Part of the project is the creation of an action plan with proposals for appropriate measures at the investment and non-investment level. Part of the project is also a partial activity, namely informing the inhabitants of the city and its surroundings about the risk points in relation to climate phenomena and at the same time providing information on the proposed adaptation / mitigation measures, which will help to minimize the impact of anticipated climate change in the city.
Summary of project results
Climate change is an increasingly important problem that cities in the Czech Republic must address and to which it is necessary to proceed conceptually. Climate change also affects the city of Vysoké Mýto, especially the increase in temperatures and temperature extremes and the increasing risk of drought, e.g. in the landscape. The aim of the city is to adapt to these changes and thus actively prevent possible risks and negative impacts. The adaptation strategy aimed to assess the risks to the city arising from climate change and propose appropriate adaptation measures. At the same time, mitigation measures were also addressed, i.e. measures aimed at reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted.
For example, the risk analysis shows that some of the most used places - such as children''s playgrounds, main pedestrian routes or public transport stops - are exposed to a large amount of sunlight during summer days, without sufficient shading. So far, the careful management of rainwater, which would allow its use or getting stuck at the point of impact, has not been solved. As a result, urban greenery and public spaces are exposed to the risks of heat and drought.
The public was also involved in the preparation of the adaptation strategy, which had the opportunity to express with the help of a feeling map which parts of the city are most sensitive to the effects of climate change. Respondents mentioned the most problematic locations, for example, bus stations, where there are large unshaded areas, or industrial areas, where there is a large proportion of paved areas. Among the measures that the city should implement, the respondents mentioned, for example, increasing the proportion of greenery in the streets, replacing impervious surfaces, revitalizing water courses or installing retention tanks, restoring field roads and alleys, as well as measures to protect against soil erosion and soil drift from nearby fields.
The strategy also includes an implementation plan in which we can find an overview of specific measures. These include, for example, the revitalization of a pond, the green roofs or the restoration of field roads.
