The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the city of Vsetín, which will take into account all the risk factors of climate change for this municipality. Part of the project is the creation of an action plan with proposals for appropriate measures at the investment and non-investment level. The aim of the project is to elaborate a quality, feasible and sustainable Strategy, which will be based on the Methodology of development of adaptation strategy of settlements to climate change, which was created within the project EEA-CZ02-OV-1-073-01-2014.
Summary of project results
The issue of adaptation of cities to future climate change is a new topic that municipalities are gradually dealing with, because they are already facing some of the impacts today. Change brings with it a number of risks and negative consequences, such as threats to people''s health, damage to the environment or economic damage. The goal of our project was to develop a high-quality, feasible and sustainable Adaptation Strategy for our city. Our intention was to prepare an umbrella document that will serve the city for its sustainable development assets and parts of which will be used in the future as documents for future calls within the framework of Norway Grants or for the drawing of other subsidy resources. The strategy takes into account the city''s available strategic documents and, based on the presented Action Plan, provides us with information for their future updates. The project also includes partial activities leading to greater awareness of residents in the city and its surroundings about the topic of climate change, its risks and adaptation/mitigation measures, which will contribute to minimizing negative impacts not only on our city. To achieve the goal of the project, i.e. to prepare a comprehensive strategic document on climate change, we implemented the following activities with regard to the active participation of the city''s inhabitants: The processing company prepared individual parts of the document with the significant participation of the general public, the main social actors (so-called stakeholers), selected members working group and representatives from the management of the city of Vsetín. We prepared two public discussions for citizens, where they learned about the topic and discussed adaptation measures and proposed possible solutions together. Through the online portal, people took part in the creation of the "Feeling map of heat and drought" in our city and filled out an additional survey. We also conducted guided interviews with representatives of major companies and organizations in the city. Our strategic document primarily focused on improving the environment and contains proposed adaptation measures, which include, for example, more efficient management of rainwater, green infrastructure on buildings, water features in the inner city, improvement of the state of greenery and public space, drought prevention, support of the landscape''s retention capabilities , sustainable mobility and energy, water management and others.
