The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the municipality of Slavkov u Brna and thus reduce the negative impacts of this change on its inhabitants. According to climatic models, the Central Europe region is expected to increase negative phenomena such as drought, heatwaves, extreme torrential rainfall and lightning floods. Higher intensity of climatic extremes is apparent from data from recent years. The adaptation measures are to reduce the negative impact of these phenomena on the lives of the inhabitants of Slavkov u Brna. To develop an effective adaptation strategy, it is necessary to carry out a risk analysis at the outset to identify thermal islands in the city and to correlate them with socio-economic and demographic statistics, green status and other indicators. This risk analysis will be a fundamental basis for the development of an effective adaptation strategy, which will include targeted measures to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on the city and to increase the responsibility of Slavkov u Brna for climate protection.
Summary of project results
In recent years, our region and city have been increasingly affected by extreme weather fluctuations, to which our infrastructure is not ready to respond in the long term. As the effects of climate change manifest themselves only with a delay, many of the negative effects will be felt only in the following years, and the problems of the city and its surroundings will continue to escalate. The goal of our project was to create an adaptation strategy for the city of Slavkov near Brno, which will prepare the city for the inevitable economic, environmental and social impacts of climate change. As part of the preparations, we focused mainly on the possibility of reducing the temperature during heat waves, capturing rainwater and energy savings.
In the first phase, we performed an analysis of the territory''s vulnerability to the individual impacts of climate change. The analysis shows that various parts of our cadastral territory are dealing with most of the negative effects of climate change, which include, for example, drought, high summer temperatures, torrential rains and others. For example, the industrial area in the east of the city mainly faces the problem of overheating, where average summer temperatures exceed the inhabited part of the city by up to 5 percent. Significant differences can also be observed in the agricultural landscape, where the risk of overheating the fields increases significantly after harvest. Given that agricultural land makes up the majority of our cadastral territory, this is a significant problem. Part of the fields is also threatened by flash floods.
Following the analysis of the territory, we created a set of measures that are suitable to implement in our municipality. The measures were discussed at a public hearing with our residents. The proposed activities that will improve the city''s resistance to climate change include, for example, building polders, planting greenery in locations where we have identified problems with overheating, replacing impervious surfaces or modifications to increase the capacity of bridges and culverts. As part of the measure, we also want to support local biodiversity, when we plan to place new birdhouses, feeders and a hedgehog tree in the grounds of the castle park. As part of the area management in the municipality, we expect to change the species composition of the forests, build anti-erosion protection elements in the agricultural landscape, or restore historic alleys..
