The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the statutory city of Havířov, which belongs to the regions with a high representation of industry and a high degree of urbanization. The aim is to create strategic documents that set out a coherent approach to the effects of climate change in the region.
Summary of project results
The implementation of the climate change adaptation project was crucial due to the increasing impact of climate change on our society and the environment. This strategy was designed to enhance resilience and adapt to the negative effects of climate change, which could include extreme weather events, water scarcity, and other challenges. The project addressed several issues such as loss of biodiversity, deteriorating air quality and risks to human health. The goal was to develop a comprehensive strategy that would minimize these risks and strengthen society''s and ecosystems'' ability to withstand the adverse conditions associated with climate change.
One of the significant products of the project was the creation of a questionnaire survey, which allowed citizens themselves to identify areas of concern related to the impacts of climate change. Based on the gathered data, it was possible to better determine which areas required priority intervention and what specific measures could be effective. Aerial thermographic mapping allowed for the identification of urban heat islands. This, in turn, enabled more targeted planning for adaptive infrastructure, such as the implementation of cool roofs, green spaces, and improved ventilation systems. Aerial thermographic mapping played a crucial role in uncovering the resilience of watercourses - this technology provided essential information about temperature distributions of watercourses and the surrounding environment. Vulnerability Analysis provided a comprehensive view of vulnerable areas where the impacts of climate change are most pronounced. Factors such as geographical location, social and economic aspects, infrastructure, and the environment were examined. The sectoral analysis focused on individual sectors of society, such as agriculture, energy, transportation, healthcare, etc. The goal was to assess how climate change will affect each sector and what measures are necessary to minimize negative impacts.
The main output of the project is the strategic document "Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the City of Havířov." The city now holds a foundation that provides a clear framework for environmental protection and enhancing resilience to climate change. Many citizens of Havířov actively participated in the strategy creation process. A total of 330 residents, primarily from central areas, filled out the questionnaire and themselves identified problematic areas. The most significant interest was shown by citizens during the concluding press conference, expressing a desire to be more engaged in the city''s planned activities. Thanks to this feedback, the city will involve its residents more actively in the upcoming events.
